We were excited to spy Whale Rider on this Kanopy poster at #ALAAC24! We are big fans of the award-wining coming-of-age film about a Māori girl who challenges tradition to fulfill her destiny. Students love it!

I need to read the book Whale Rider by Māori writer Witi Ihimaera. It appears the film adaptation misrepresented and misunderstood Māori culture and was not true to the source material. This is usually the problem when white people try to portray other cultures through their own lenses. The film grossed $41.4 million worldwide. #WhaleRider #Māori #Maori #Indigenous #movies
