For an easy, cheap altar cloth: look in your local craft section for "fat quarters" used for quilting. Sew, glue, or tape the edges to stop fraying.
(Bonus points if they're made of cotton or other biodegradable fabric.)

cool idea for my witch/magic followers

get a map of your *immediate* area or the area you go to normally to commune

not a country or a state map, *maybe* a detailed county map. something in your area.

print it off google if you need, but print it. if it's an area with little to no roads, get a topographic map. these are available here: https://topobuilder.nationalmap.gov/

it's a little more advanced, but google has ways you can create your own maps of points.

take the map with you everywhere you go. make notes on it of things you notice. use cute planner/kids stickers to make it more fun

examples:

- does one area feel different to you? how? where are the boundaries?
- does a tree live among many dead ones?
- do you see the same animal in an area?
- where do bees live?
- where do crows gather?
- what crossroads catch your eye?
- is there a cemetery?
- notice areas with unusual plant growth, like clusters of herbs, poisonous plants, or unusually thriving flora.
- any abandoned buildings, ruins, or old wells?
- do people avoid or gravitate toward certain areas naturally?
- hidden pathways: Little-known trails, shortcuts, or secluded places that seem to call to you
- a few good spots that fit various spells more aesthetically
- witch signs? like little offerings

once you've filled the map with your observations, keep it in your grimoire for reference.

refresh it yearly, keeping only the things that have served you well.

Witch Tip: Keep the names of your closest spirit allies a secret. Names, especially true names, have the power to summon or bind a spirit. Unless you want to hand that power to another practitioner, those names should be kept private. (Doesn't apply to Gods, saints, and well-known spirits whose names are already public knowledge.)

Witch Tip: There's nothing wrong with asking questions, but quality of the answer you receive is often directly proportional to the quality of your question.

A vague, generic question will most often result in a vague, generic answer. A specific, thought-out question will most often result in a specific, thought-out answer. (Given that you're asking these questions to a knowledgeable source.)

An example of a generic question is "How do I start practicing witchcraft?" Seeing as witchcraft includes a broad set of practices and every witch defines the term slightly differently, you might get a million answers that aren't what you're looking for.

But if you phrase your question more specifically or add extra detail (ex. "How do I practice witchcraft in the style of British Traditional Wicca?" or "How do I practice Appalachian folk witchcraft?") you'll get a more helpful, actionable answer!

Witch Tip: Use your thumb print to create your own personal sigil!

Using an ink pad, take a stamp of your thumb on a sheet of white paper. Then, using a different colored pen, trace over just some of the lines/shapes to inspire the shape of your sigil.

Then, copy just the traced lines onto another sheet of paper. Add any extra designs or details that you want to finish up your sigil.

Feel free to place your sigil wherever you wish or use it as a personal taglock in spells! Create one sigil from your left thumb to use in spells when you want to receive/attract something, and create one from your right thumb for spells that project/repel to an additional layer of correspondence.

The choices are nearly endless from there!

Paper is a tool that's easy to overlook in witchcraft because it's rather mundane. However, paper doesn't have to be a boring tool, and the type of paper that you use can have a powerful influence on your spell work.

For example, let's say you want to add some oomph to a petition for luck. You could collect fortunes from fortune cookies and some paper scraps, shred them, and turn the shreds into a fresh sheet of paper following a simple recipe online. Now you have your own lucky paper to write your petitions on!

while divinity and magic can absolutely manifest in physical ways, please practice discernment.

is your candle burning with a huge flame because of magic or did you just pack it with a bunch of flammable dry plant material? is apollo talking to you or did you just see a normal bird outside, where birds live? did the house spirits knock down your new poster because they dont like it or did you just not tape it down properly?

some things just exist because they exist and thats that. not everything exists to communicate some higher meaning to you specifically. thats an egocentric way of looking at the world. life is so much bigger than that.

magic, spirits and the divine can and do communicate with us through mundane means. but a lot of people (especially newcomers) tend to assume everything is a sign, when sometimes its just something existing. its okay to be unsure. its okay to say "hey, maybe this is a sign or maybe its not."

and its okay if something isnt a sign. it doesnt mean your gods abandoned you. it doesnt mean your magic isnt working.
