Representative Emmer,
I am deeply concerned over the fact that DHS is gathering personal data, including location data, social media data, photographs of people on the streets, and other data on American citizens. In some cases, they are purchasing data sets through 3rd party vendors; in other cases they are generating the data themselves (such as photographing faces of legal observers and protesters).
Regardless of how they acquire these data, it seems to be a clear violation of privacy laws and prior Supreme Court rulings (see Carpenter vs. United States). Furthermore, gathering data on American citizens is clearly outside of the scope of “immigration enforcement,” and therefore DHS and ICE have no valid reason to house such systems of records.
Congress needs to hold DHS and ICE accountable to the laws of the land, the courts, and Congress itself. The abuses of power the Trump administration is getting away with daily are wholly unacceptable.
These abuses have been widely reported.
