"The Tides ยท Of Life"
The creation of the sculpture

This video shows how the was originally designed as a logo in and rendered in different styles over the years

In 2024 we finally made it into the wall it always was supposed to be by 3D-printing it in four pieces on a 5 Plus

Genuary 2025 Day 19: "Oops Art."

"The inbound Stream of Dreams"

So today I'll cheat and post one of my favourite images ever.
A sculpture I modelled long ago in Softimage XSI with subdivision surfaces and then tried to UV-unwrap generatively...
...which went beautifully wrong, the checkerboard grid was deformed into a fantastic pattern.
I have this hanging on my wall as a large print.

A black and white image of a small sculpture in the center that is a kind of "wall-hugger" figure, from which bands of black stream out - or in - in a fantastic manner.
There also is the text: "The inbound streams of dreams" printed left and right from the center.

When I see this interface of #Softimage, I think that it was years ahead of the competition, but I also notice that #Blender was inspired by this application, I believe that #Blender3d is the natural heir.
Old #XSI developers where are now? They could help the community #b3d

I've been on a trip down the memory lane with the early versions of and how cool I thought the whole package was when I used to aspire to be a CGI artist one day. One thing I noticed in later releases is the 3D cube gizmo that was added after the Autodesk acquisition. If I were to guess this was a request from the top level execs and was meant to show that XSI became a part of the Autodesk family, even though it's completely out of the fashion with the rest of the UI. Ugly af...

"The inbound Stream of Dreams"

The third one in the series, the same sculpture again, but this time a happy accident happened in Softimage XSIs UV Editor... ๐Ÿ™‚
Love it, although a friend said it gives him eye-cancer... ๐Ÿ˜‚
I have it hanging on my office wall in 1m square for a decade...

A sculpture in black and white with strong flowing lines spreading out from the central figure, that may be described as something like a stylised squirrel climbing up a wall

Another incarnation of the sculpture I posted yesterday.
This time rendered with a special C++ camera shader I developed for Mental Ray in Softimage XSI many years ago.
It allows to displace the camera rays with for instance a fractal noise like in this case.

For all my (3D) life I loved NPR rendering styles and this is one of the best results I got.
Love it! ๐Ÿ™‚

A 3D sculpture in a painterly style in black and white. The form could be thought of as a very stylised squirrel climbing up a wall...

This organic sculpture was originally created in Softimage XSI in 2006 and rendered with a custom Mental Ray C++ shader I created for illustrations that allowed me to enter precise colours and completely ignore lighting... ๐Ÿ™‚

I will post some further incarnations later...

An intense orange sculpture, modelled with subdivision surfaces in Softimage XSI, depicting a stylised creature on a wall. Originally intended as a logo and wall-lamp/ornament.

It's been 7 years since the final release of . Really wish I had a perpetual license of it.
