#ZombieFires

The wildfire season has started north of 55 latitude. Fires that stayed going in ground, under the snow are back.

More than 3000 people are expected to evacuate in the next 18 hours.

“ Residents of the town of Fort Nelson and Fort Nelson First Nation have been ordered to evacuate due to an out-of-control wildfire in northeast B.C., according to an evacuation order . . .

"Residents are advised to evacuate the area immediately and begin driving south towards Fort St. John. If you have a recreational vehicle, or your own vehicle, fuel stations are being planned along the route south,"

B.C. is seeing a record number of ‘zombie fires’. What does this mean?
Daniels said a couple of examples of "zombie fires" include the Horse River Fire, which forced the evacuation of Fort McMurry on May 1, 2016. That fire burned for more than a year.

How the B.C. Wildfire Service is preparing this winter for the 2024 #wildfire season cbc.ca/news/canada/british-col “The province's worst wildfire season on record in terms of area burned was recorded in 2023,

Now, the #BCWildfireService (#BCWS) says it's stepping up preparations ahead of the spring to deal with holdover fires — colloquially called "#ZombieFires" that lay dormant under the ground before re-igniting in hotter conditions.”

in the Arctic: 's extreme season offers a glimpse of new risks in a warmer, drier future

First, as the organic-rich soils dry up because of changing conditions, they can burn slowly and release vast amounts of .
Second, that spread underground are harder for to tame and extinguish.
Finally, these fires don’t die easily. They can smolder through the winter and reignite during early spring.
