🏛️ Pan and Hermaphrodite 🏛️

Pan and Hermaphrodite take centre stage this #FrescoFriday. Found in the House of the Dioscuri at Pompeii, Pan tries to turn away from Hermaphrodite while Hermaphrodite tries to hold Pan closer…

🏛️ MAN Napoli, inv. 27700.

#AncientRome #History

This fresco is delicately coloured with a range of blue tones in the background which are enhanced by the fact that Hermaphrodite wears a blue gown that is loosely draped over their left arm and lower body. Hermaphrodite is depicted as pale while Pan is depicted as deep brown with goat legs and horns.

🌟New Episode - ¿Por Qué No Los Dos? 🌟

It’s 395 BCE in ancient Rome! The Romans ended 396 BCE on a high with their success against the southern-most city of the Etruscans, Veii. But is all well in the Roman world? That may depend on which god you talk to… 👀👀

Detail from ‘The Triumph of Camillus’, c. 1470/1475 attributed to Biagio d’Antonio and Workshop. This detail showcases a supremely anachronistic chariot with Camillus (and everyone else) in medieval style dress. But keep an eye on those white horses…

Guess which iconic duo has a brand new episode coming out later this week? Strap yourselves in fellow adventurers, we’re heading back to ancient Rome (not that we ever left 😅)

Dr Rad and Dr G looking remarkably calm and smiling together.Just some more of our usual chaos. What has Dr Rad seen? And what will Dr G do next? At least we have matching flowery outfits. Dr Rad leans over and appears to look out of frame while Dr G hams it up for the camera with hands raised.

“According to the inscription, her first accomplishment worthy of praise was avenging her parents’ murder”

“At 180 lines, the ‘Laudatio Turiae’ is currently the longest surviving personal inscription from Classical Rome.”

Helen De Cruz @helendecruz.net • 5/6/2024:
It begins already like this "You were orphaned suddenly before the day of our wedding when both of your parents were killed together in the solitude of the countryside. It was mainly through your efforts that the death of your parents did not go unavenged:" 3/

Helen De Cruz @helendecruz.... • 5/6/2024:
Well, who knew a virtuous Roman woman's familial duties would include avenging her parents? He continues "You insistently demanded punishment and you got it, so strenuously performing your familial duty that even if we had been present, we could not have done anything more."

It’s a cat amongst the parrots and pigeon today for #MosaicMonday! One parrot seems like they might be aware of the danger but it looks like the other two are in danger of becoming lunch!

The beauty of the garden fresco from Livia’s villa at Prima Porta is sublime. With lush fruits ripe for the picking, flowers in bloom, and birds flitting between the delights, the fresco offers a kind of Augustan version of paradise.
