Sugar permeation discovered in plant aquaporins

Aquaporins, which move water through membranes of plant cells, were not thought to be able to permeate sugar molecules, but researchers have observed sucrose transport in plant aquaporins for the first time, challenging this theory.

Did you wake up this morning and think, "I wish I knew more about how #aquaporins are involved in the #synergistic transport of #magnesium and #water in #cassava"?

Do we ever have good news for you!

Diagram to illustrate that cassava aquaporin MePIP2;7 is involved in Mg2+ transport through interaction with MeMGT9, a lower affinity magnesium transporter protein. Knockdown of MePIP2;7 in cassava leads to magnesium deficiency in basal mature leaves with chlorosis and necrotic spots on their edges and starch over-accumulation.

Quick-closing valve allows fish to rapidly regulate the water in their cells

High-resolution structure of a #fish #aquaporin reveals a novel extracellular fold life-science-alliance.org/cont

By studying the #aquaporins in the cells of the #ClimbingPerch Anabas testudineus, which sometime climb out of the water and spend time on land, researchers have identified a water channel that appears to have a unique quick-closing valve.

Photo of the climbing perch, anabas testudineus, out of water. This fish have the ability to stay on land which imposes some very particular demands on their aquaporins.
