#Book/#info request!

I'm looking for an art book or other resources about HIV/AIDS art, especially art done by groups like ACT UP & works about inadequate government response.
(Open to other illness art topics as well, but this feels most immediately relevant.)

I raided my library with the help of a very cool nonbinary librarian. We found a PILE of semi-related resources, but most only have 1-4 pages on the subject as part of other queer history or activism art texts.

Olen Taina.

Something puzzling you? 🤔 Ask your librarian! They'll help you find answers to your burning questions. Granted, Google can do that too. But is such a cool service, still in place in many around the world, including in , as My Modern Met reports. Does it exist near you?

@jorgeapenas

Please if you want to do something about it, take 5 minutes more and do it "right" (sorry about the use of that patronising word)

1. use shareyourpaper.org or similar to get your papers in a indexed repository, not somewhere only google will have the power to find it. (somewhere unpaywall will find)

2. Forget about google scholar, your orcid page should be where you go for having an academic profile (open data, accessible via API).

For those of you that are #cataloging librarians, I have a question. Suppose you have a video that is 50/50 English and another language. How do you pick which language will be coded in the 008? Guidelines say alphabetical & use the 041 for all languages; but representation matters and so does topic and library focus. Does the topic of the video influence the choice?

"Cataloger discretion" offers a lot of leeway; but how do you apply that discretion? #AskACataloger #AskALibrarian

i was researching how breadfruit trees were moved around the world by colonials and came across this quote on the wikipedia entry for william bligh: "In order to win a premium offered by the Royal Society, he first sailed to Tahiti to obtain breadfruit trees"

it's not the first time i've seen references to royal society competitions/prizes/quests and i'd like to learn more about this subject.

but the histories of the royal society that i've come across so far have been in that sort of "heroic colonial"/"great man" mode.

i'm looking for something that's more along the lines of "what role did the royal society have to play in the movement of plants and other organisms?" it seems like they were putting out these "challenges" for "explorers", but that's where my knowledge ends.

i'd also be happy to read a book that's about the role of the royal society in empire-building & colonialism in general.

thank you in advance!

i'm tagging a bunch of stuff in the hopes that someone might be able to direct me: #STS #ScienceStudies #HistoryOfScience #CulturalAnthropology #plants #colonialism #SaturdayLibrarian #AskALibrarian #BotanyHistory #ColonialHistory #HistoryOfEmpire #CulturalStudies

@TheLordChiefRockaNumberOne It depends on what type of books you prefer already! If you're already a fan of crime novels, then OUT OF SIGHT is my suggestion. If you love Westerns, HOMBRE. If you aren't already super into either genre, you should give KILLSHOT a try!

@apparentlyrolly Oh R, you're a person after my own heart!

So this is a mix of fantasy and sci-fi, but A PSALM FOR THE WILD-BUILT by Becky Chambers is a balm for the soul. And it's a short book, too, perfect for those of us with TBRs that reach to space.

THE RUTHLESS LADY'S GUIDE TO WIZARDRY by C. M. Waggoner has a romantic subplot, but is a cozy (if a little oddball) read.

In a more magical realism direction, we have THE CAT WHO SAVED BOOKS by Sosuke Natsukawa. It's adorable and extremely comforting.

This one isn't fantasy at all, but if I'm reading you correctly, I think you would love THE DAYS OF ANNA MADRIGAL by Armistead Maupin. It's the last book in the series, but it's also one of those series where each book stands alone, so not to fear that you're jumping in at the end.

@coffeentacos If you haven't read ANNIHILATION by Jeff VanderMeer, you absolutely must give it a try. Shorter sci fi horror with a similar suspenseful and compelling writing style to Starling, but it is pretty divisive in the sci fi community because it leans more toward horror.

I also have to recommend IN SPACE NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU SCREAM, edited by Hank Davis. Lots of short stories by sci fi and fantasy greats, all aimed at bringing that terror.

Books that are larger but I think you would also enjoy: SALVATION DAY by Kali Wallace (cw world-ending viruses) and WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN HERE by Lena Nguyen.
