The forest service has been pushing lies about how thinning and clearcuts reduce fires and/or intensity. This is absolutely not true. Here are a couple articles with top scientists shining a light in this "mitigation" and how trump wants to make it even worse with the "fix our forests" act.

[P] See, the belief in the face of an ongoing absence of evidence strikes me as just another typie repetition of aether and phlogiston. If the perspective had been "I don't know!" then perhaps we'd be exploring better alternatives than dork matter/energy. That isn't very typie though, is it? We have to wait for them to exhaust themselves, only for those same typies to deny they had any part in it later. Yay science.

[P] I mean, this is why I don't like theology or atheism either, as both represent absolute beliefs rather than a healthy dose of "I don't know." I might be falling into the Dunning-Kruger trap, but "I don't know." feels like the healthiest thing to say. A healthy "I don't know." would've avoided the farcical, comical, clownish hubris of aether and phlogiston, we would've learned about tectonics sooner, too.

[P] It's like typies have to believe in the church of science or they'll be eaten by space sharks or some shit. It feels like the addle-brained tribalism of a primitive mind to me. "US must know ALL! If US does not know ALL, the evil doomsharks from the great black THEM-OTHER of SPAYCE will eat us!" It angers me a lot. I don't like absolute faith in something, it's the greatest of follies. Space sharks won't eat you.

[P] We have the power to shrug and say that—without evidence—we just really don't know. It's fine. There's so very much I don't know. I'd say what i know counts next to nothing, an infinitesimal value contrasted against the myriad possibilities of existence. But that isn't typies, typies feel like they have to delude themselves into believing they know, they can't admit they know almost nothing too. So here we are.

[P] Bloody typies and their god-fearing inability to admit that they simply don't know has been anathema to science for so long as there's been science. A nonsense assumption peddled by charlatans is accepted because typies can't stop clutching rheir magic god crystals, manically babbling about the terrors of space. It's very tiresome. Carl Sagan called this out, too. It's an ongoing pathology. We can simply not know!

[P] It's a consistent truth that we have no evidence for dork matter/energy, but thanks to snake oil-selling charlatans we're doing it again! It winds me up as so much research money has been wasted (yes, wasted) chasing the magical space-dorks. Eventually the dork matter/energy nonsense will be quietly slid into the same filing cabinet of humiliation that aether and phlogiston sit in. I hate that science has to be this.

[P] Reoccurig? I mean, aside from the reproducibility crisis wracking many fields thanks to typie cults of personality? We've been here before. Aether, anyone? Phlogiston? It's typie idiocy that's left me jaded about science. The pyrite of dork matter and dork energy are no different than aether and phlogiston. The intelligent neurodivergent admits "I don't know." The typie buys snake oil from charismatic charlatans.

[P] Another frustration with typie group-selves is bad science. I'm convinced that the assumption of dark matter is nonsense. I say assumption as it hasn't the wherewithal to be classified as hypothesis or theory, dark matter continues to be blatantly unscientific—because it isn't about science, but rather cults of bloody personality. There's so much dumb hubris and following along in this reoccuring mess.

Nice one, Wes

Going to get Jordan Peterson to address officials overseeing dietary guidelines next? Have Jeremy Clarkson set the environmental agenda?

Might as well do at this point. They've all sold loads of books too, that's all the qualifications you need, right?

missed this WORT coverage last week on the absolute trash fire of the attempted bodycam pilot in the North district: wortfm.org/independent-monitor

it's worth skimming the OIM report linked there

they were ordered to do a randomized controlled trial and track their additional time required

instead they did none of that and hired a statistician who gets paid by a body cam company to badly misinterpret their not-at-all-RCT data

This graphic is floating around the right-wing Internet... Obviously it's insane, but even so, I have some questions for people who might believe it.

(For now, anyone with half a brain and a basic knowledge of science, graphs and politics, you will have to suspend your brain and accept the chart as something legitimate instead of a paint splat with random words on it.)

1. Has the right finally disavowed itself of Antivaxxers? I mean, great, but that's news to me! I see they are still keeping the Climate Change Deniers though.

2. I am not sure why these liberals would be calling Social Democrats, Social Liberals and Liberal Democrats "fascists" because that's just not linguistically or academically correct, it's a semantic train wreck and a logical fallacy all on one track.

3. "Don't tread on me" - I know the Libertarians are often nuts, but I don't think people are calling them fascists. In fact they are the ones calling the right fascists at the moment, aint'cha Ron Paul!

4. Fascism (or what it calls the "Lunatic Fringe") is apparently immune from being called Fascist by the anti-fascists. I have no idea how that one even works.

5. How is "Science, Intelligence and Logic" in the same camp as Climate Deniers, Neocons (the Religions Nationalists), and the Alt-Right?

6. The Neocons and the Alt-Right hate each other, why are they next to each other in the same segment?

7. How come Anti-fascists are not calling Fundamentalism and Corporatism "fascists" as well?

8. Why is "Antifa" in the maroon slice? Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, Reagan, Eisenhower and many other heroes of the 20th Century were proudly AntiFa, and I don't think they were Socialists or Communists. I’m guessing Statism’s there just to make it look clever, because it doesn't fit at all.

9. WHERE ARE THE POOR ANARCHISTS?

10. Do the colours mean anything?

The text describes it pretty well - But it's a colour wheel, with an arbitrary line across it and the bottom part is "what antifa calls fascists" - The labels on the colour wheel are supposedly a political compass, but it's not, it's just arse gravy.

:InDanger: However they also say:

R. A. Carlos recently reported on an alarming five-fold increase in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on the island of Guam from 2016 to 2022. He reviewed 95 studies and concluded that the increased trend paralleled the widespread exposure of young children to microplastics.

and the citation given is to the abstract of a conference presentation which ACTUALLY says the author reviewed 95 studies for "neurotoxic effects of microplastics on other species, including fish, mice, mollusks, nematodes, crustaceans and chicken" not to find fricken autistic crustaceans but to find neurotoxicity.

But autism definitely isn't neurotoxicity in general, and probably isn't in any specific way.

So what we're left with is an observation of 5x ASD and plastics exposure on Guam. Is it not likely that whatever societal changes increased plastic use to skyrocket 5x also caused other seismic shifts in behaviour and exposure and - dare I guess - autism testing?
