"Authors say they were censored on ‘book banning’ tour at Bay Area school visit
The authors were on a Bay Area school tour promoting their book, 'The Day the Books Disappeared,' which addresses themes of book banning. They were scheduled to speak at the school on Oct. 17, but the principal requested they avoid discussing certain parts of the book.
'Book banning is real, it’s happening everywhere, it’s happening in California,' said Caroline Kusin-Pritchard, co-author of the book.
Joanna Ho stated, 'Caroline was like this is completely out of our integrity like, we won’t be changing our presentation if we’re giving the presentation.'
(. . .)
The San Ramon Valley Unified School District released a statement explaining their concerns that parts of the presentation were not suitable for younger students, specifically those in transitional kindergarten to third grade, ages 4 to 9. They stated that the book’s message of kindness, empathy, and understanding was overshadowed by a focus on book banning, which they felt extended beyond the developmental level of the youngest students.
The district further explained that they had reached out to the organization coordinating the author visits to request adjustments to the presentation for younger audiences. When no response was received, they made the same request directly to the authors upon their arrival at the school. The authors chose to leave rather than modify their presentation.
The authors, however, dispute the district’s account.
'We were not asked to adjust for younger audiences despite what the district statement says. They told us not to talk about book bans or mention queer books. We did not choose to leave, we were told to leave when we wouldn’t agree not to talk about book bans or mention gay books,' said Ho."
