#DailyDigest for 2025-04-28

It's been a productive day!

  • Made progress on the #writing front. I've mapped out several upcoming scenes for my novel that still sits somewhere between #scifi and #speculativeFiction. Still on track to finish by the end of next month. (+1437 words)
  • Brainstormed some interesting #storytelling and #interactiveFiction ideas with my business partner.
  • Still can't shake the uncertainty about how my project and/or client landscape will look this year. The not-knowing part is definitely outside my comfort zone.

EDIT:

  • A small update on #bibisco: I only used it to keep track of my word count. The actual writing is done in #obsidian. The editor just feels sooooo much nicer than the clunky thing #bibisco offers.

#Writing with #bibisco

I've been playing around with #bibisco for project Deadly Pearls. My interest was piqued because it looks almost like an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) for authors, with everything you (might) need to write a story.

I'll keep this post updated while I'm still figuring things out while writing my #cozyMystery

My likes

  • Word count and tag tracking works well, and it gives me nice statistics for what it tracks.
  • Built-in mind maps and timelines.
  • The guided approach to writing
    • Clean sections for story preparation and general plot ideas.
    • Purposeful chapter creation aka "What is the reason this chapter exists in your story?

My dislikes

  • The editor. Seriously. It's not fun to write in. For me, it's the lack of options to customise it. The fonts available are not the ones I would choose and (similar to #Plottr) I can't use the fonts I have installed on my system.
  • UX...
    • The overall UX is good, but there are SO many things where you have to click a "more" button in the bottom right corner of the screen to change the name of a scene (which is in the top left corner).
      • (Update) *You can double click on the name and then edit the title. I would still prefer to have some sort of (visual) indication that this is possible.

Things I would like to see

  • QoL additions to the word count tracking, like updated daily word count goals based on my actual pace. It's only updated manually when I go back to the writing goal settings and hit 'calculate' again to get an updated daily word count goal.

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds @newton Thanks for sharing. I am on my "journey" to find best tool for writing. I was using #Manuskript but it looks it is dead now. #novelWriter sounds like awesome alternative. If not going with #Bibisco.

@lydiaconwell From what did you move to #LibreOffice? Did you try #Bibisco or #Manuskript before?

I personally only use LibreOffice Writer when writing short stories and poems. But then I haven't published a complete book yet either.

Having explored Bibisco a bit, I realized something fun: In chapters, you can create bite-sized scenes and stitch them all together so that writing a whole ass chapter doesn't feel daunting! Focusing on incremental writing and stitching it together in chronological order feels pretty damn good!

They even have a handy series of blogs that are devoted to breaking down the creative process in a processable way. I'm going to delve deeper into their website, while learning more about Bibisco, hopefully this will lead to a great writing outcome!

I'll include a link to their blog posts: bibisco.com/blog/

I never really liked #bibisco because of how small the typing window was. Then I discovered that they actually have a full screen button that turns the entire screen into a type writer.

I apologize for all the nasty mutterings I had against the software. You're beautiful.

#WritingWonders 11.7. - What about your writing would you like to improve?

- How to write emotional expressions to make characters more relatable. I hardly know how to do that in real life. 😅

- That "show, don't tell" thing, because I tend to tell too much, I think.

- The way I organise my writing and notes and everything. I started looking at #Bibisco a few days ago and I'm hoping it's just the right tool to keep me from plunging into chaos. See social.tchncs.de/@marcr/110679

To get an answer to my question about supporting images, I asked the developer of #Bibisco, Andrea Feccomandi, directly, and he has already answered me. :)

I had given as an example the use case of a fantasy novel to insert a map at the beginning of the book.

He said that the ability to add images is planned for the next version, as many people have asked for it.
The workaround at the moment would be to export from Bibisco (e.g. to .docx) and then insert the images in another tool.

Some insights from trying out #Bibisco for the first time:

- The tags help you assign characters, objects, etc. to each scene, giving you an overview of what appears where and when.

- The interview questions for the characters are very versatile and a great help when designing characters.

- I feel that the interface does not get in the way at all. Very tidy.

- Lots of helpful tools to organise and structure the text.

I'm going to take a closer look at #Bibisco tonight. Does anyone know any good tips for getting started or pitfalls to avoid?

Okay I just spent about thirty minutes using #bibisco to set up my short weird fiction tale. Good lord they're not kidding the tool is more for a novel than anything else.

Outlining characters and motivations is a lot of work considering all the questions provided by the program.

Well I fucked around a little bit with #bibisco and I'm a bit surprised by it. Even though what I was doing amounted to just shitposting.
