Up Close with a Tawny Owl

At the PolskaEire Slavic Festival in Cork yesterday, owls were part of the festival, with kids getting a chance to hold one, much to their delight.

The tawny owl, featured prominently in the foreground, is known for its distinctive “twit-twoo” call, which is actually a duet between a male and female—one calls “twit” and the other replies “twoo.”

Throwback Thursday to that other day when I saw a full-grown juvenile Common Black-Hawk insist that mommy catch and cut up his snail for him, snails are scary, baby can't be expected to catch them!!! 🤣

Two equally large hawks of the same size, with the blackish hawk on the right clutching a snail shell in her claw and the beige and brown hawk on the left looking all pitiful. The pitiful bird is a fledged (probably for some time) Common Black-Hawk still being fed & watched over by the parents. Apparently, baby bird is so helpless that even the mighty snail must be caught and torn apart by the parent. Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. Photo by Peachfront.

🌍 Western barn owl (Tyto alba)

The western barn owl is a medium-sized, pale owl with a distinctive heart-shaped white face, dark eyes, and a mottled silver-grey and buff back. Its underparts are pure white, sometimes with fine dark spots.

It has a widespread distribution across Europe, Africa, and parts of the Middle East, favoring open habitats like farmland, grasslands, and marshes, often utilizing old buildings or tree cavities for roosting and nesting.

Mainly nocturnal, the western barn owl hunts small mammals (especially rodents) with silent, buoyant flight, using its exceptional hearing and facial disc to locate prey in darkness. It typically emits a characteristic eerie screech rather than a hoot. 2.5 Flash (Edited)

Ten subspecies are recognised.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Red-Shouldered Hawk

Last week I went to a local park and as I parked my vehicle I heard a hawk call repeatedly in the woods nearby. As luck would have it there was a trail going in that direction. I was hopeful for a shot of the hawk but knew that realistically it would probably see me and take off immediately. I guess, just like the green heron, these birds are used to seeing humans and aren’t easily startled by them. This one flew down from a treetop, towards me, and perched on a fallen tree maybe 30-40 feet away. I really couldn’t believe it but did not hesitate to put the shutter to work lol. The lighting was not ideal, however it was a great experience. And I learned that they can rotate their heads around like owls do.

🌍 Bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus)

The Bateleur is a striking, medium-sized eagle with a distinctive, very short tail, long pointed wings, and vibrant red facial skin and legs. Adults are predominantly black with a chestnut back and tail, and grey shoulders. Females have more grey on their secondary flight feathers. Juveniles are all brown with bluish facial skin, maturing over 7-8 years.

Found across Sub-Saharan Africa and possibly the extreme southern region of the Arabian Peninsula, Bateleurs inhabit open savanna and woodland. They are largely solitary or in pairs, territorial, and spend much of the day in acrobatic, low-altitude gliding flight, rocking side-to-side. They are opportunistic hunters and scavengers, feeding on small mammals, birds, reptiles, and carrion. 2.5 Flash (Edited)

Conservation status: Endangered (IUCN 3.1)
