The Eurasian Stone-curlew prefers dry, stony areas for nesting, relying on its mottled appearance to stay hidden from predators. It's mostly active at night, blending into its surroundings during the day. No wonder that most encounters with this species involve individuals fleeing or being observed from a great distance! It has a unique call heard during breeding season. Its diet includes insects, small mammals, and reptiles, hunted primarily at night.
A fun fact? Its nickname, "Dikkop," comes from the Afrikaans word meaning "thick head"and refers to the bird's large, round head and prominent eyes, which give it a somewhat comical appearance.

Eurasian Stone-curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus)—master of camouflage in dry, stony landscapes. Mostly nocturnal, rarely seen up close, but its eerie call reveals its presence at evening/night. Nicknamed "Dikkop" ("thick head") for its big round head and striking eyes.

We should only take from the land what it can naturally give! Water is precious here. Both the groundwater we can draw from our borehole and the rainwater we harvest from the roofs are limited resources. To protect this fragile balance, we must limit the number of guests; and even then, everyone’s care and cooperation in saving water is essential.

Iris xiphium is native to Portugal and Spain, thriving in dry meadows, woodlands, and scrublands. It supports pollinators like wild bees and butterflies, enriching landscapes often threatened by agriculture and land abandonment. Though not endangered, it benefits from habitat conservation that protects Mediterranean plant diversity.

Thinking our relation with the environment...
Every meal counts!
Today, the environmental costs of our carnivorous habits are spiraling out of control, putting the future of our life on Earth at risk. Choosing plant-based meals could dramatically reduce the impact. Check out our vegan breakfast menus for inspiration!
