I drilled four holes in my boat today.

On a (literally) much lighter note: I have light in my boat again!

Sewing a flybridge cover for a friend. Syvert the sewing machine is whining more about this project than my knees are, and I look forward to having a living room floor again.

(The box is for the new solar panel I got for my boat. I installed it today and as soon as I am done with this sewing project. I’m headed out to sea.)

Dear Whale Pumps, why oh why did you have to change the placement of the mounting holes in the new Gusher Galley? My 20 minute pump replacement is now into its 6th hour 🤯

If I hadn’t been so exhausted from boat work I would have gone into details about why I have a photo of plywood turned into crisps, but for now I’ll just leave this here.

I don’t know what’s more annoying, that someone broke in (again) or that they didn’t close the hatch properly after them.

Learning all kinds of new info about boat paint, especially two-part LPU paint! Got the 2nd coat of primer onto the boot stripe today (photo shows 1 coat from yesterday). Tomorrow is sanding and first coat of Flag Blue (a dark blue)! Hoping I get it right, but also okay if I fuck it up. #boatprojects #boatwork #boatlife

The red bottom of the hull is visible, and the boat is supported by metal scaffolding on a gravel surface. Another boat can be seen in the background.

After fixing the transmission and shaft seal issues on my #sailboat, I set off southwards.
Winds were light, so I was motor sailing.
Down below, I smelled diesel, quickly traced to a leak (squirt squirt) in the high pressure side.
Engine off, sailed back upwind and into the nearest port - thankfully my boat sails well in light winds. Spent the evening pumping diesel out of the bilge and cleaning up.

Time for that electric motor…

It’s been hard work, and I still wasn’t sure until afloat it would be successful, but but it seems I’ve fixed the driveshaft leak on my boat!
I *think* the problem was old front engine mounts - I’d replaced the rear ones, but was advised the fronts were ok. Under power the shaft seal was spurting water, my theory is that the engine was pivoting over the new rear mounts, flexing the drivetrain and causing the leak.

A pox on boat bodgers!
On those who dismantle but don’t bother reassembling properly; those who don’t bother replacing half the screws; the speedy hackers who maul rather than working carefully; the woodbutchers with one blunt saw and no square; and those who leave their sawdust and mess to collect oil and salt in distant corners.

I *think* I’ve found the problem.
Shaft is pretty well centred at the outboard end of the stern tube, but not at the inboard end. That might be enough to cause the seal rotor and bellows to flex apart when motoring. I only spotted this because I took the seal completely off to check it.

I’m seriously considering an electric pod drive..

Before and after.

The original idea was ok, but it had been largely bypassed by a previous owner, who took one lead off the distribution block, put a choc block on the end and wired everything badly through it. I thought I could work with it, but when I pulled it out to inspect it was quite badly corroded. There’s further evidence of the crazed driller having passed by.

All I wanted to do was to run a new power lead for my new VHF and AIS!

I had to scrape some antifouling paint off the hull of my boat, to allow me to fix a couple of things. Antifouling is nasty stuff, so I collected the scrapings on a plastic sheet and vacuumed up any dust.

Boat owners further along had 3 people scraping their entire hull, all in protective gear. But they then left a pile of blue scrapings and dust to be blown round the boatyard and neighbouring car park.

In other countries it’s mandatory to dispose of this stuff safely 😠

This week Coco (and we) made a new friend at the laundromats. Some friends left and some friends arrived. Some of the stuff we ordered online arrived. Frustrations mounted as we scraped endless layers of paint off the rudder. And we got some not so good news regarding our engine.
