This speech by Steve Hofstetter’s to the American Association of School Librarians is incredibly powerful

Hey #Missouri folks! If you'd like to join the fight against #BookBans and in support of #Libraries and #Librarians, you can join (as an individual or an organization) the Missouri Right to Read Coalition. There are no fees to join, and it's an excellent way to stay informed and stand up for the #FirstAmendment.

"Banned Books Week is being quietly banned in public libraries across the US. This is a political choice in an era where libraries continue to claim being "not political."--Kelly Jensen

Via Kelly Jensen: two authors of a book about book bans were told they could not talk about book bans or which books are being banned in the U.S. right now, during their presentation about their book.

Please SHARE, especially with people in California and other "good, blue states" who can't seem to understand just how fucking widespread this plague of puritanical bullshit is.

We are deeply saddened that we were prevented from meeting with young readers at Country Club Elementary in San Ramon, California during our tour for _The Day the Books Disappeared_, a picture book we wrote about book banning, illustrated by Dan Santat.
When we arrived, students were waiting for us in the library, but instead of taking us to meet them, the principal pulled us into an office and told us to "only talk about the book". When pressed, she told us not to speak about book bans of the types of books being banned, specifically books with queer representation. We responded that this would be out of our integrity, and that we would not change our presentation. Despite the district approval for your visit, the principal informe us the directive cam from above and excused herself to call her district supervisor. Forty minutes later, students were sent back to their classrooms and we were not permitted to present.2/3
We hurt for the students and broader school community. When school and district leaders choose to silence diverse voices instead of uplifting them, students are most impacted. Students learn that school is not a safe place for all. They learn that some people have value and others are not worthy of being visible.
We both became authors because, as children, we did not see ourselves represented in books. Over the past few years, it has been heartening to see an increase in inclusive children's literature and horrifying to witness the corresponding escalation in book bans targeting books by and about the most marginalized. This is why we wrote _The Day the Books Disappeared_. We wanted to create a safe, accessible way to open conversations around the importance of reading freely.3/3
Over the last two weeks, we've visited with thousands of pre-kindergarteners to fifth graders across the country and we have been inspired by their powerful insights. One student shared, "just because you don't like a book, doesn't mean that it's not right for someone else". Our book and presentation encourage students to expand their perspectives and recognize our interconnectedness. We want students to know their stories and all stories matter.
Students of Country Club Elementary, we hope you know that your community is better because you are in it. We see you. We celebrate you.
A system of fear can only be fought by an even stronger ecosystem of courage, and we've witnessed the ripples created by remarkable acts of bravery across the country on behalf of students and learning. We can all choose to be part of an ecosystem of courage. Together we can fight for our freedom to read.
With love, Joanna and Caroline.

Like many public service workers, librarians have found themselves in the crosshairs of the far right’s widespread efforts to censor material written by and about people of color and the #LGBTQ+ community.

I really wish more people paid attention to what book bans, library purges, demonization, stalking and threatening of librarians, and the changing "education' standards championed by assholes like DeSantis mean for the future of this country.

First it was, "states rights", not slavery as the reason for the Civil War, now this.

In 1971, Ariel Dorfman and Armand Mattelart published “How to Read Donald Duck,” a book-length essay critiquing Disney comics as capitalist propaganda for U.S. corporate and cultural imperialism. It became a bestseller throughout Latin America and is still considered a seminal work in cultural studies. It was first published in Valparaiso, Chile when Allende was in power. Pinochet banned it and conducted public book burnings.

A federal judge has ordered the Pentagon to restore nearly 600 books to schools serving military families. U.S. District Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles said that the Department of Defense Education Activity removed books and altered curricula "in ways that suppressed certain viewpoints and deprived students of access to ideas about race and gender," Advocate's Christopher Wiggins writes.
