‘Bring Her Back’ (2025) really got under my skin.
One of the best horror films of the last decade.
Great acting, pacing, atmosphere, makeup effects, sound design, directing and camera work.
It has some very creepy and unsettling vibes. The last shot will stick with me for a long time.
Not for the faint of heart.

#BringHerBack had me asking if I’d ever get to sleep again after watching the entirety of its run-time through my fingers. Truly exceptional and daring work from directors Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou. Starring Sally Hawkins and an exceptional young cast.

I don't really buy many movies anymore and this was my favorite of the year (so far). I feel like physical discs are pretty much a thing of the past, but I prefer it.
Most of the movies in the last few years have been sequels, prequels, reboots, remakes or new adaptations, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I want more originality. #BringHerBack #A24
Update : The physical release (4K UHD as well) is expected in the US on August 26th.

'Bring Her Back' is the second movie from Australian brothers, Danny and Michael Philippou. And while their debut was impressive, their follow up jumps way ahead in production values and suspense.
This is more of a thriller than a horror, although the horror elements play an important role in keeping you unnerved because they are never really explained. It's a device to raise tension, keeping you in the dark as much as certain characters are.
British actor, Sally Hawkins, pulls off a natural Australian accent (she also pulled off an impressive Bronx accent in Blue Jasmine) while playing foster mum to two teens who've just lost their father. One of these kids has limited eye sight.
When we meet this woman's other disturbed foster child (pictured on the poster), we know these two new additions to her family are in serious danger.
I was reminded of classic old Oz films like 'End Play' and 'The Cars That Ate Paris'. One, because of the mind games, the other because of that sense that something's going on, but what?
This film is universal as there's nothing distinctly Australian in the script which needs explanation, nor is there anything altered for an international audience as in Mad Max, when they use the term gasoline rather than petrol.
And unlike the Philippou brothers first film, this movie is not just aimed at teens. If you like a good thriller, go see it. I'm looking forward to following the careers of these young film-makers.
They've had offers from Hollywood but have turned them down, preferring to create their own projects. They are auteurs in the making, and I'm keen to see what they produce if they ever try different genres.
