I think I already answered this. I believe they are "#BuckyBall" joints.

Slide some sticks or tree limbs into them to easily build the framework for a portable shelter.

The protruding "balls" would make it easier to slide the completed structure into place across the ground.

Much easier to carry around than entire tents with poles & canvas.

(If I'm right, they predate Buckminster Fuller's invention by a couple of thousand years.) 🤔

Löcher sind in Durchmesser und Tiefe parametrisch anpassbar.

Sculpture at the garden. There are a half dozen pieces scattered around the grounds of this botanical garden. Pictured here are Fuller (as in Buckminster) by Doris Sung and Trace by Nancy Graves.

Fuller is near the entrance, so I see it most times I go walking there, but Trace is waaaaay on the other side.
