Chickadee’s Dance Among the Branches

This image of a Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) is one of my earliest photos of these birds. At the time, I was still learning to handle a camera—honestly, I still am—but, as with everything, I know more now than I did then. My equipment wasn’t quite as advanced either. I believe I used a Canon 90D to capture this shot, though it might have been a Canon Rebel T3. Interestingly, I just looked up that model and found it described as ‘vintage.’ Despite that, the image itself is dynamic—an action shot. I also just noticed something beneath the bird that looks like a crystal, possibly a drop of water shaped by tiny branches.

Carolina Chickadee Duo

Carolina chickadees (Poecile carolinensis) have been especially abundant this year. In this image, I captured two perched side by side on a branch—a delightful sight. I’d guess they might be a male and female, but that’s only speculation, as these chickadees are not sexually dimorphic, meaning males and females look nearly identical.

I don't always take great photographs, but when I do, you can find them at:

"This image captures two Carolina chickadees perched on a slender, weathered branch, their delicate forms exuding a quiet charm. The birds are small but lively, with soft gray backs, crisp white cheeks, and distinctive black caps and bibs—markings that give them an endearing, masked appearance. Their fluffy feathers seem to catch the light, revealing subtle shades of gray and buff. One chickadee tilts its head slightly, as if in mid-conversation, while the other gazes forward attentively, poised and alert. The background is a blur of muted earthy tones, suggesting a peaceful woodland setting. The gentle curvature of the branch adds to the natural elegance of the moment, framing the chickadees beautifully. In the lower right corner, the signature "© Swede's Photographs" is visible, subtly marking the artist's credit." - Copilot

Purple Haze

There's an out-of-focus tree in the background that adds a purple hue to the photo for some reason. In the foreground, a cute little bibbed bird is perched on a branch. The bird is a Carolina Chickadee (Poecile carolinensis). I wonder if it was windy that day because the chickadee's feathers look rather windswept.

The image features a Carolina Chickadee perched gracefully on a slender branch. The bird has a striking black cap and bib, with white cheeks that contrast beautifully with its grayish body. The background is softly blurred, blending soothing blue and green hues, which makes the chickadee stand out even more prominently. The lighting accentuates the bird's delicate feathers and the texture of the branch, creating a captivating focus on the bird.

Bird Feeder Dash

Carolina chickadees (Poecile carolinensis) are "take out artists." They don't stop at the feeder and eat, what they do is stop just long enought to grab what they want, usually a sunflower seed and leave.

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

Chickadee and Sunflower Seed

This would be a much better photograph had I gotten closer. I added a X1.4 Extension to the Sigma 150-600 lens, to get more reach, but when I zoom above 400mm the auto focus gets quirky. That is why I removed the extension a while back. But I want to sit farther away, and the extension increases the focal length to >800mm. I just have to put up with the quirkiness. It does cause me to miss some good moments. In this photo not only is the bird's image not sharp, but there is an aberration on the bird's head top above the small branch. The bird is a Carolina chickadee.

Good morning. 🫠😀😉

27 October 2024

Their living with the dogs. Their living with the cats. The dogs and cats are living in the house of the people who live there.

I got up this morning and the first thing I had to do is cleanup after Charlie. I put my Bissell carpet cleaner to work, but I can't say I was a happy camper. On the bright side, all of that sudden activity woke me up. So now I'm Woke, awake, alert at a level that I'm usually not at this early in the morning. See, there usually is a bright side to things. Whoa ... it is mealtime. Hmmm ... maybe it is me who is living with the dogs who live here. Well, it is also time to relax with coffee.

"The image shows a chickadee in mid-flight, captured just as it's flying away from a wooden bird feeder with a sunflower seed in its beak. The feeder has a slanted roof and contains a mix of seeds. Hanging on the right is a green metal suet cage, filled with suet. The background features a red wooden wall, likely part of a barn or shed, and a white section of a fence on the left. The lighting creates contrast between the bright areas and the shadows, highlighting the bird and the feeder. The photographer’s watermark, “© Swede’s Photographs,” is visible in the bottom left corner. This moment captures the dynamic interaction between the bird and its environment, showcasing nature's activity in a human-provided setting." - Copilot

Take Out

Some bird species like sparrows, finches, and cardinals will stop and graze at the bird feeders. Not Carolina chickadees (Poecile carolinensis), they grab their grub and go. This one grabbed a sunflower.

"In winter, the Carolina Chickadee’s diet is about half plant, half animal. The rest of the year about 80–90 percent of their diet is animal (mostly insects and spiders). Carolina Chickadees glean insects from foliage and tree bark, often hanging upside down to do so. They hold seeds and insects in their feet, wedged against the branch they’re perched on, to peck into them. They readily use bird feeders." - allaboutbirds.org

Monochrome Munch

Here is an image of a Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) that I saw in forest behind my home. It was pretty dark among the trees and the chickadee was too far away for a detailed closeup. I like the image anyway and thought maybe displaying it in black and white/selective color would make it more interesting. I think a gold frame will set it off.

I've had several inquiries about how to get a print of some my photographs. This is a hobby for me, so I haven't been equipped to handle those requests. But I enjoy what I'm doing and want to share my photographs.

So, I set up an account and website with pixels. My website is:

If you want a print of one of my photographs, you can get it there, If I haven't loaded it, let me know which one it is, and I'll gladly load it there for you.

" Carolina Chickadee, a small songbird with a distinctive black cap and bib, is perched delicately on a branch. Its soft gray wings and back contrast beautifully with its white cheeks and underparts. The bird’s sharp, inquisitive eyes are focused on a sunflower seed it holds between its tiny feet. The background is a lush shade of green, providing a vibrant and natural backdrop that makes the monochrome bird stand out even more. Black Cap Morning

This is a Carolina Chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) which is a close southern relative to the black capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) in the north. They look so much a like that I originally mixed up these little birds. Live and learn ... eh.

This chickadee perches on a tree branch with green leaves, facing the camera with its head turned to the left. Light reflects off its black left eye. The bird's body is partially obscured by the tree leaves. There is another out of focus branch peeking in to right lower half of the frame with a pink flower. The background is out-of-focus forest green.

"The Carolina Chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) is a small passerine bird native to North America. It features a distinctive black cap and bib on its head, contrasting with white cheeks. Its back and wings are gray, while the underparts are soft buffy or pale beige. These agile birds measure about 4.5 to 5 inches (11 to 13 cm) in length, with a wingspan of approximately 6.5 to 7 inches (17 to 18 cm). Carolina Chickadees thrive in deciduous and mixed forests, as well as suburban areas with mature trees. They’re social and active, often moving in small flocks, and their diet includes insects, seeds, and berries. Their recognizable “chick-a-dee-dee-dee” call echoes through woodlands. Ranging from Texas to the Carolinas and up to the Midwest, they’re year-round residents in their territories. Fortunately, these delightful birds are not considered threatened and have stable populations." - Copilot

Forest Dweller

Here is a Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) with a forest background.

"John James Audubon named this bird while he was in South Carolina. The curious, intelligent Carolina Chickadee looks very much like a Black-capped Chickadee, with a black cap, black bib, gray wings and back, and whitish underside. Carolina and Black-capped chickadees hybridize in the area where their ranges overlap, but the two species probably diverged more than 2.5 million years ago." - allaboutbirds.org

The background is blurred with hints of green, suggesting foliage or trees, which provides contrast and makes the bird the clear focal point of the image." - Copilot

"This tiny, approachable bird has a short neck and large head, giving it a distinctive spherical body shape. Its tail is fairly long and narrow. Its bill is a bit thicker than a warbler’s but thinner than a finch’s. Carolina Chickadees have a black cap and bib separated by stark white cheeks. The back, wings, and tail are soft gray." - allaboutbirds.org
