Was reminded of these "A Charlie Brown Christmas" posters by Laurent Durieux (laurentdurieux.com) today. Really love both, but I think I do have a soft spot for the melancholy that the first one conveys.

Illustration mostly done in shades of blue, showing little Charlie Brown, holding his little tree, standing on the porch of a house, staring longingly upwards towards the starry sky, as snow is surrounding the area. It is night and light is coming out of the house, with the shapes of Lucy and Snoopy both visible through the side window. The title "A Charlie Brown Christmas" is placed at the bottom part of the poster, with a single red ornament hanging from the O letter of the word "Brown". At the very bottom there is a line of dark houses lit by Christmas lights and the quote "That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown".An illustration of the iconic last scene of the Charlie Brown Christmas short with all the children gathered around the decorated small tree, happily singing, with a smiling Charlie Brown in the middle. Snoopy's little house is also visible behind them and snow is surrounding the entire area. The "A Charlie Brown Christmas" title appears at the bottom part of the poster, with Charlie Brown's little tree, with one single red ornament placed on top of it.

Today marks 60 years since the release of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" back on December 9, 1965. Written by Charles M. Schulz and directed by Bill Melendez, with an iconic jazz soundtrack composed by Vince Guaraldi.

In its short 25 minute run, it touches upon the loneliness and melancholy that tend to surface during the holiday season, the superficiality of commercialism, but also ultimately focuses on hopefulness, connection, friendship, the meaning of little gestures, and the joy and beauty that can be found in the small, simple things.

Like most of Schulz's work, it feels disarmingly earnest, and even though the story is told through the lens of childlike innocence, its core message resonates with people of all generations, which has solidified it as a holiday classic for six decades now.

It's that time of year again in the USA.

From now until next Easter, there will be seemingly interminable reruns of Charlie Brown television specials.

I sometimes feel that I am the few people in North America not to be charmed by "Peanuts". I find it sickeningly twee.

In addition, Charles Schulz sounds odious!

It is now 55 years since Charles M. Schulz sent this response letter to the then 10 year old Joel Lipton.

"I believe that our greatest strength lies always in the protection of our smallest minorities."

Letter written by Charles M. Schulz, with the text:

“Dear Joel: I think it is more difficult these days to define what makes a good citizen then it has ever been before. Certainly all any of us can do is follow our own conscience and retain faith in our democracy. Sometimes it is the very people who cry out the loudest in favor of getting back to what they call ‘American Virtues’ who lack this faith in our country. I believe that our greatest strength lies always in the protection of our smallest minorities. Sincerely yours, Charles M. Schulz”

10 years ago, "The Peanuts Movie" was released. Written by Cornelius Uliano along with Charles M. Schulz’s son, Craig, and his grandson, Bryan Schulz. It’s a genuinely sweet film that feels true to Schulz’s world and characters, ending on a tender and hopeful note that does little Charlie Brown justice, rewarding his kindness and granting him with a bit of well-earned resolution.

A compilation of two of the posters of the film, showing on the left dozens of the characters all sitting in a movie theatre with Charlie Brown and Snoopy in the front row eating pop corn, and on the right Charlie Brown tenderly hugging snoopy with a yellow background and the trademark black stripe of his shirt. Above and below there are several small screenshots depicting different moments from the film.

I just learned The Pokémon Company tried to capitalize on the death of Charles Schulz by hiring a furry and a pedophile to make a bad newspaper comic. I love capitalism.

In celebration of 75 years of ‘Peanuts’ here is one I drew in homage to the great Charles Schulz. (sadly, no relation 🙂)

This is a color single-panel cartoon by M. Schulz, drawn in homage to Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts. Charlie Brown and Linus lean on a low brick wall. Charlie Brown, on the left, wears a yellow shirt and has a small curl of hair on his forehead. He looks worried as he speaks. Linus, on the right, has straight hair combed back and looks at him attentively. The caption in a speech bubble above Charlie Brown reads: “I’m not sure I’m serving main character energy.”

🖍️ Mythology, empathy, and cartooning collide in this new episode of Audio Signals Podcast.

I mostly post about #Technology, #Society & #Cybersecurity — but by now, you probably know I’m also obsessively passionate about storytelling in every form.

So, here you go — a new episode from my Audio Signals Podcast, where I muse on #stories, #storytelling, and #storytellers.

🖍️ What happens when you mix mythological gods, emotional storytelling, and a #Peanuts illustrator who teaches empathy through comic strips?

You get #Mythtickle — and you get Justin Thompson, whom I’m honored to host on the podcast for the second time!

In this latest conversation, Justin returns to talk about his original comic strip, how he teaches compassion through art, and the creative freedom (and chaos) of building your own mythological universe.

We also touch on:
• Teaching kids in Brooklyn and Tanzania
• The upcoming Peanuts version of #Clue (yes, really)
• And how his book If I Gave the World My Blanket is being adapted into a musical play for children

👉 And if you missed our first episode together — where we explored the incredible legacy of #CharlesSchulz, the global impact of Peanuts, and Justin’s creative journey inside the Schulz Studio — here it is:

Vor der Lesung stromerte ich noch durch das Willhelm-Busch-Museum in Hannover, und sah die Bleistiftzeichnungen vom alten Willhelm, die danach auf Holzdruckstöcke übertragen wurden. Willhelm Busch soll sich beschwert haben, die Graveure hätten seine Zeichnungen manchmal geglättet, wenn sie ihnen zu „hässlich“ erschienen. Mir gefällt das Handlettering von Busch.

Sundry Sunday: Earthbound Meets Peanuts
Given how similar their art styles are, it's surprising that there aren't more stylistic crossovers between Charles Schulz's and Shigesato Itoi's respective classics of popular media, but this is the first direct connection between them that I can name.
