"The representation of numbers, as physically measured on the surface of the graphic itself, should be directly proportional to the quantities represented." If you try this I'll be curious to know how it goes. #chartjunk

I asked Claude and ChatGPT to react to this chart.

Both initially applauded.

I told them to read Tufte and reconsider.

Both regurgitated Tufteisms but missed the main flaw.

I told them they missed the main flaw.

Finally they got it: The Lie Factor.

"The representation of numbers, as physically measured on the surface of the graphic itself, should be directly proportional to the quantities represented."

If you try this I'll be curious to know how it goes.

Die Abbildungsbeschriftung lautet "Field of view comparison between thermal and standard cameras. Thermal cameras typically have a narrower field of view, optimized for detecting heat signatures, while standard cameras cover a wider area for detailed imaging [6]."

One thing LLMs are extremely good at is helping create complex #d3js graphs.

I mean, I wouldn’t ever trust them with actual data analysis, but autocompleting deranged JavaScript is certainly in their wheelhouse and this legit makes using D3 way easier.

#ChartJunk

A complex graph featuring a Cartesian coordinate system with the x-axis ranging from 0 to 20 and the y-axis ranging from -20 to 80. It includes a scatter plot with numerous points, some of which are inside shaded circles or partially shaded circles, indicating different data subsets or categories. Overlaid on the scatter plot is a line graph with two lines: a solid blue line and a dashed red line. The solid blue line has labeled points indicating specific dates in April 2024 (April 5, April 10, April 15, April 20, and April 25). The dashed red line appears to be an extension of the blue line beyond the last labeled point. The background grid contains shades of blue polygons, suggesting another layer of data visualization.

#FanimeCon may be over, but the anime is here to stay. According to #OpenStreetMap at least, the South Bay is home to the one of the anime shop industries in California and the entire U.S. (Just 3, but who’s counting.)

Anyways…

Come to tonight’s #SouthBayMapNight and catch a walkthrough of dashboard.ohsome.org/ and other tools for creating reports and visualizations that aren’t as pretty as this #ChartJunk.

meetup.com/open-source-san-jos

A colorful stacked area graph of anime shops in OpenStreetMap by U.S. county from January 2015 to present. The shops represent 24 counties (omitting Cumberland County, Maine, for technical reasons), with Alameda County, California, leading coverage of anime shops since 2018. But the y axis only goes up to 35.

A chart shown by my electric utility company. I'm skeptical of your bar graphs, Alliant Energy...

#chartjunk #fail

A bar graph showing three bars for a current electricity bill, the last bill, and the current period from last year. Despite values going from 31.71 to 76.58, the bars all have exactly the same height.

My brain can’t decide if that bar chart over- or under-reflects the opinion differences. I want to see the totals. It feels like . Help me out?

Added: pretty sure the Guardian version (red) under-reflects the differences.

I don't think @EdwardTufte would like the scroll animations that @wapo puts in its pieces about art & visualization washingtonpost.com/opinions/in #chartjunk #art #ai #AIart

@marick Back in 2002 I saw Alan Kay give a talk, where he talked about Harvard grads believing that seasons were caused by the Earth being closer/further from the Sun.

@bsmall2 If you are interested in Edward Tufte's work, please have a look at @LabPlot, an open-source and cross-platform application for curve fitting, data visualization and analysis.

You can get Tufte's "Maximal data, minimal ink" theme for various plots in a single click with @LabPlot.

Ahem, Columbia Journalism Review, *none* of those publications are "left-leaning." Do you even understand what the left is these days? Those are centrist, mainstream corporate journalism outlets. The Washington Post is owned by a billionaire, fer chrissakes. "Journalists Remain on Twitter, but Tweet Slightly Less" cjr.org/tow_center/journalists #Chartjunk #Journalism

Gadzooks I just realized that neither #GoogleSheets nor #LibreOffice support any 3D graphing. (though they do offer some fake-3d shadow #ChartJunk yay?)

Wow, I need to keep this as (yet another) example of how to mislead with #datavisualisation, by the #StLouisFed no less: geopoliticaleconomy.com/2023/0 (via @gruber ) #chartjunk

Edward Tufte offers two principles for making efficient graphical representations:
- erase non-data-ink, within reason.
- erase redundant data-ink, within reason.

Above all, show the data! Tufte

Do you know that you can get Tufte's "MAXIMAL DATA, MINIMAL INK" theme for plots in a single click with @LabPlot via Theme > Tufte?

Get the project via File > Open Example.
