Took inspiration from this amazing piece of Chris Foss pre-production art from the unmade 1975 Dune film. Foss is a living god really.

I'd always known about #ChrisFoss; back in the 80s it was impossible to buy #SpaceOpera without his art. But I never realised that, like me, he is from #Guernsey. Then I came across "Surrealist Defences" in the island museum. I recognised it, both as Chris Foss, and because that is the #German observation tower at L'Erée (pron "leRAY"). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Saumarez. Painting "Surrealist Defences" by Chris Foss. In the foreground a giant wrecked gun turret is being worked on by a high-tech flying crane and three tiny space-suited figures. In the background on a hill is a cylindrical concrete observation tower with four horizontal slots to see from. The landscape is green and parts of the turret are overgrown, suggesting that the damage is old. White vapour emerges from the lower part of the turret and is pierced by beams of light from the flying crane.

Fort Saumarez on the west coast of Guernsey. On small hill there is a cylindrical watchtower with 4 horizontal slots for watchers to see from. The upper three quarters of the tower is concrete, but the lower part is local granite, showing that the Germans built on top of the pre-existing Napoleonic fort. On top of the tower are 4 radio antennae. Below the tower are walls and smaller buildings, also in a mix of German and Napoleonic. In the foreground is a large concrete block which appears to have been a gun mounting of some kind, but the hill is heavily overgrown and only one corner can be seen.
