We're working on a piece about #retro darlings — those pieces of #tech that refuse to die because of communities that have sprung up around them to keep them alive. Well, it finally happened: the "Absolutely Apes" cam (of the orangutans at the San Diego Zoo) stopped working on the #Chumby. It had a good, long run of about 16 years. I lack the skills to go in and edit the Flash code to correct whatever changed -- the cam is still up (see link below) but it doesn't work on the Chumby anymore.
I use the Chumby as a clock on my desk, and as a standalone streaming radio player, plugged into a Tivoli iSongBook for decent stereo.
Tonight, I found that I can generate executable code for the #Chumby using Go as a cross-compiler, since it supports ARMv5 as a target. Now to see if I can get any of the Go framebuffer packages to work with it's old, old Linux kernel.
For all of you who are using the Sony Dash as a Chumby (I'm almost sure that of anyone who sees this, it's just me, but nevertheless) -- the weather interface stopped working again at the end of August, as it did last February. And like then, intrepid maintainer Duane found a fix (an alternative feed, perhaps). Details here (I've been checking every so often):
Also, before they left, they asked, "Do you need any help getting any of your other devices hooked up?" and I thought, I'd like to watch these guys deal with the clunky #Chumby internet interface.
But I said no thanks.

@lamp OFC that board is a good option in lieu of bad #CPE|s and rarely good options for a lot of people...
That being said a lot of good #Router OSes allow logstashing and thus dashboarding with something like #Grafana...
But I do think that a reconfigureable status dashboard - whether it's a physical display or website in LAN [propably both would be done the same way] - would be cool...

Another major accomplishment today: got the weather display on my Sony Dash / Chumby working again, thanks to the fine Duane at chumby. And I got to ssh into the Dash and fiddle with some of the files, which is always fun.
