I hate trying to roast when I’ve got a cold. I’m a super taster so can often smell/taste the roast from the other side of the house. When I’m sick, my olfactory system is normal person and I don’t think I could cope.
It’s a little darker than I’d like, but it’ll do. (17 mins at 450 f in an air fryer).
Finally got a vacuum sealer. Gonna save some beans for later in freezer😀

Coffee is more than just a drink; for many, it’s a passion, a lifestyle, and an art form. If you’ve ever found yourself deep in a conversation about the origin of beans or the perfect brewing method, you might just be a “coffee nerd.” While being a coffee enthusiast has its perks, there are also a few downsides. Let’s explore the good and bad about being a coffee nerd.
The Good
1. Elevated Coffee Experience:
Being a coffee nerd means you’re not just drinking coffee—you’re experiencing it. You know the difference between a flat white and a cortado, and you appreciate the nuanced flavors that different beans bring to the table. Every cup is an opportunity to savor a new taste and aroma.
2. Master of Brewing:
Whether it’s pour-over, French press, AeroPress, or cold brew, you’ve mastered the art of making the perfect cup at home. You know the exact grind size, water temperature, and brewing time for each method, ensuring that your coffee is always top-notch.
3. Connection to Culture:
Coffee is deeply rooted in cultures around the world, and as a coffee nerd, you get to explore this global connection. You might delve into the history of Ethiopian coffee ceremonies or the Italian espresso culture. This interest can lead to a deeper appreciation of different cultures and traditions.
4. Community:
The coffee community is vast and welcoming. As a coffee nerd, you can connect with others who share your passion, whether it’s through social media, local coffee shops, or coffee festivals. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people and exchange knowledge.
5. Always Learning:
Coffee is a field with endless learning opportunities. From experimenting with new brewing techniques to exploring different coffee origins, there’s always something new to discover. This constant learning keeps your passion alive and exciting.
The Bad
1. The Cost:
Being a coffee nerd can get expensive. High-quality beans, specialized brewing equipment, and regular trips to your favorite coffee shops can add up quickly. Your quest for the perfect cup might lead you to spend more than you’d like.
2. The Obsession:
Sometimes, the passion for coffee can turn into an obsession. You might find yourself critiquing every cup of coffee you drink, even at friends’ houses or while traveling. This can make it hard to enjoy a simple cup of coffee without analyzing every detail.
3. Time-Consuming:
Perfecting your brew can be time-consuming. From grinding fresh beans to carefully measuring water and waiting for the ideal brewing time, your morning coffee routine might take longer than most. This could be a challenge if you’re pressed for time.
4. Risk of Snobbery:
With all the knowledge you accumulate, there’s a risk of becoming a coffee snob. It’s easy to fall into the trap of looking down on others who don’t share your level of enthusiasm or prefer a simple cup of drip coffee. This can strain social interactions and make others feel uncomfortable.
5. Caffeine Dependency:
With a love for coffee often comes a higher intake of caffeine. While a moderate amount of caffeine has its benefits, overindulgence can lead to dependency, jitters, and disrupted sleep. Finding a balance is key to enjoying coffee without negative side effects.
Conclusion
Being a coffee nerd comes with its own set of pros and cons. On one hand, you get to enjoy an elevated coffee experience, connect with a global community, and continuously learn new things. On the other hand, it can be costly, time-consuming, and occasionally isolating. The key is to find a balance—enjoying your passion without letting it take over your life. After all, coffee is meant to be savored and enjoyed, one delicious cup at a time.

There’s no direct evidence to suggest that being a coffee nerd specifically causes someone to die young. In fact, moderate coffee consumption has been associated with several health benefits, such as a reduced risk of certain diseases like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and some cancers, as well as improved heart health and longevity. However, these benefits can depend on various factors, including how much coffee you consume, how it’s prepared, and your overall lifestyle.

Potential Benefits:
In conclusion, being a coffee nerd isn’t likely to cause you to die young as long as you enjoy your coffee in moderation and maintain a healthy lifestyle. As with anything, balance is key.

And this, this is why I #roast my own #coffee at home #HomeRoaster #CoffeeNerd
(Forgive the cup, my regular one is dirty).
Green beans from #NosaFamilia in #PDX (Guatamala FSJM T1) at $9 per pound, roasted yesterday in my oven using a wire rack and the air roast function for 12 minutes.
2x Shots pulled in a #GaggiaClassic with 6 bar spring + PID, bottomless 58mm with 24 in and 2.5x yeild.
It is a goooood cup.
Any #coffeenerd can advice on #zp6 special and #aeropress recipe?
Our standard 30g beans + 500ml just off the boil filtered water Chemex brew, starting with 50ml water 30 second bloom.
Extraction time was just under 4 minutes, bang on really but could maybe take the grind down a notch next time.
(Some day we need to replace our now 15 year old Dualit burr grinder.... but it suffices for now.)

Gutamalan FSJM green beans from #NossaFamilia in Portland. Air roasted yesterday on an air frier tray in my oven for 12 minutes (preheated oven to 425F)
23 grams in, 58mm basket, 20 secs, 48 grams out (so a little fast).
But loooook. I managed a light roast!
