Listen to this track by one-time America’s Sweethearts and smash-selling punk-pop trailblazers The Go-Go’s. It’s “Daisy Chain”, the final cut from their 2001 record God Bless the Go-Go’s. That record represented a return to the studio twenty years after their smash debut Beauty and the Beat. By this time, after they’d all endured the rigours of the music industry both together and apart, this new album represented a return to their punk rock with pop sensibilities form in the studio, together again.

The sixteen-year span between this record and their last allowed them to consider their influence on other bands and musicians who’d come up behind them since their early-Eighties heyday. This included Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, who joins them on the single “Unforgiven”; an acknowledgment that he and his band were as captivated by the Go-Go’s as much as anyone. As such, the new record was as much a celebration of The Go-Go’s musical legacy as it was a new batch of songs that showed them to be a unique and potent musical unit with their own distinct sound even after a period apart.

“Daisy Chain” serves a unique role on the album. It tells their story from their own point of view for the first time, telling listeners what it was like to be in The Go-Go’s during their years as young women with a number one record and a series of top ten singles. This was during a time when all-girl groups were never expected to score that high on their own. But this tune is not just a compact VH1 rock bio.

As rock star tales go, theirs is as compelling as they come as a bona fide American success story. But like so many stories of success, its main characters did not escape unscathed. There were rushes of joy and feelings of invulnerability while reaching the top that only young people can feel in their purest forms. But there was also pressure and pain for which people in their early twenties have no workable frame of reference to fully understand or deal with.

A big part of that had to be about their role as pioneers; self-possessed and precociously talented women who were songwriters and instrumentalists who achieved a number one debut record on their own. This was in an era when bands with all-female line-ups were still packaged as sexual avatars and not regarded primarily as musicians. The Go-Go’s didn’t entirely escape that trap as their 1982 Rolling Stone cover proved all too clearly, featuring the band in their underwear emblazoned with the suggestive title “The Go-Go’s Put Out” .

Being the first to do something can be a very rewarding and a very lonely experience all at the same time. Possibly to compensate for that, they certainly spilled the wine and other things during this period of mainstream pop success as so many rock bands did and still do. The consequences were predictable even if the reasons were understandable.

When one examines one of their biggest and most joyous hits at the time, 1984’s “Head Over Heels”, that song’s lyrics read like a desperate call for help as a song about knowing that destruction is ahead and yet feeling utterly unable to do anything about it. But it’s so much fun as a song, no one seemed to notice. That seems like an overall theme for the band during their meteoric rise. The Go-Go’s exuded cool and a sense of fun as they projected themselves in the MTV video flow and on the radio. But they were also skating on some pretty thin ice – or maybe better, waterskiing on some very choppy waters.

This brings us to “Daisy Chain”.

“Soon the other stiletto would drop
For the sweethearts of pop
Who knew we were going down
So careless with what we’d found”

~ “Daisy Chain”, The Go-Go’s

By the time they cut this song and others on the new record in 2000-2001, they were in their forties. They had gained perspective and self-knowledge that simply is not available to people twenty years younger, let alone for people under the conditions that the Go-Go’s were at that age. There is baggage of a kind we don’t always know we’re carrying. Recognizing that, and then actually putting that baggage down takes time and a certain amount of stillness, too. There’s not much room for either in the rocket ship journey to the top of the charts.

On “Daisy Chain”, some of this hard-won perspective is expressed in purely musical ways. The Sixties references in their early music is pure Shangri-Las meet Californian surf rock which helped define the unique sound they crafted for themselves. On this cut, we’re in a different Sixties mode, more in line with the latter half of that decade. “Daisy Chain” is a song of reflection, with a musical sophistication to match the lyrics that are often starkly honest in their telling of The Go-Go’s story; punk rock girls in 1978 burning out like shooting stars by the end of their first run as a band seven years later.

But this song is more than just about time lending perspective on their story. This is an expression of love between bandmates who shared a daisy chain of support and friendship that brought them through it all together. These days, should you follow any or all of the Go-Go’s on social media, you will find that they constantly champion each other and send love across their respective accounts in comments sections. This is even after a history of ups and downs that include legal disputes, now long since settled.

On “Daisy Chain”, one gets the impression that the Go-Go’s are singing to their younger selves, sending them love in the same way that they would eventually do for each other years later on Instagram and in other forums. It’s the love for each other that comes across the most in this song about reflecting on a shared past, recognizing their triumphs, but also their struggles and shortcomings that endangered them and their union, and resolving never to allow it to happen again. As such, this isn’t just a story about the meteoric rise and fall of a rock band inside of four minutes.

It’s a love song.

The Go-Go’s aren’t currently active as a band as of this writing. Their story reached a very satisfying milestone with their long-overdue October 2021 induction into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. That accolade was later followed by their induction into the California Hall of Fame this past February, 2024. Nowadays, they’re just a loving group of friends, their daisy chain intact.

Have a look at this video of their induction as they celebrate their accomplishments, and are celebrated for the same, with an audience of fans and peers.

Around the time of their induction to the Hall, bassist and songwriter Kathy Valentine wrote and published her autobiography All I Ever Wanted. Buy it via kathyvalentine.com.
