@olena @autistics what you're describing here is language acquisition as opposed to language learning.

An awful lot of language classes teach _about_ a language (grammar rules, lists of vocab, etc.) which is kinda like "teaching swimming" by having tests on Archimedes' principle and fluid dynamics and skeletal physiology and then expecting students to "put it all together" when you push them into the pool.

Acquiring a language through is absolutely the way to do it.

I'm curious about something. Mostly aimed at fellow fully #blind candidates but I'd be happy to hear thoughts from others as well.
In #language learning, the research shows good results for students immersing themselves into their target language. When exactly to do this is somewhat hotly debated, but I'm curious to what degree the visual component plays into this is a fully blind person were to attempt it. No images, no way to point at things, not QUITE as seamless a way to hover over a word and get its meaning/other information and no real way to learn from, say, tv shows that teach through visuals either, although subtitles CAN at times be a useful tool. Would we do it later? Earlier? Differently than most? I'm curious on your takes. I know what I do, but I can't be the only one looking into this. #languageLearning #linguistics #comprehensibleInput

I've compiled a list of TV show & movies for beginners to intermediates to watch in te reo Māori. Any suggestions are welcome.

I've written a new blog post summarising my te reo learning progress in the past month, and shared my small goals for the next month.

> "The main problem I’ve had this month was consistency in doing listening and reading immersion. Even though I find them enjoyable, other things take up my free time and I didn’t spend as much time as I want to."

#ComprehensibleInput

@LivInTheLookingGlass

Generally the largest hurdle at the beginning is learning the individual sounds of Mandarin that are quite a bit different from English.

Comparativley, English has more vowel sounds, while Chinese has more consonant sounds. So, it's a bit of a struggle to accurately produce them if you can't hear the difference.

I would advise going through the IPA (international phonetic alphabet) for mandarin and mapping the places of articulation to the appropriate Pinyin.

At the same time, there should be a focus on getting lots of novice level input so that you can better hear the sounds. Youtube has a lot of comprehensible material that definitely should be taken advantage of.

The comprehensible input can also be used to learn the characters and to practice reading and writing with them.

Basically Pinyin is an indispensable tool to learn Mandarin, but also to write and to read it. It would be prohibitively time consuming to not use it, if someone is coming from a language using the Latin alphabet. It should definitely be used in conjunction with learning the rest of the language.
