Be still, my beating heart. Scotland’s majesty is breathtaking. ♥️ Four quick snapshots from our journey - the first two from the north east coast of Skye, and the second two facing the Cuillins from the Glenbrittle Valley. Stunning. 🙂 #Skye #Scotland #Photography #Cuillins #Mountains #Trotternish

I took this photograph from the moving coach on the way down to Sligachan yesterday.

Sligachan (Scottish Gaelic: Sligeachan) is a small settlement on Skye, It is close to the Cuillin mountains and provides a good viewpoint for seeing them. It is situated at the junction of the roads from Portree, Dunvegan, and Broadford. It is therefore a place that all visitors and locals must pass through on the way north or south on the island

When bitter passion stirred the earth The Cuillin first knew pangs of birth, Tugging each way inside earth’s womb, Cracked the soil, gasped for room, Shook off the heather and the grass Then froze in an ungainly mass; The lava took thought, bided its time And then once more begin to climb Till earth had no more soot to spew; Then in the vacuum, winds rushed back, Sucked by the mountains’ magnet, blew And, hard as iron, filed away The gabbro, that each storm sung black, Until the peaks, in man’s own day, Gap-toothed, lie growling at the sky. Thickening the darkness, I’ve seen them lean Over the glen, and stamp the scene With anger, while the hissing wind Blows night around, and chases it From peak to peak, until the light, With grey fingers, gropes to find Stray corners of the sullen range Whose iron passions never change. Loch Coruisk (in Scottish Gaelic, Coire Uisg, the "Cauldron of Waters") is an inland fresh-water loch, lying at the foot of the Black Cuillin in the Isle of Skye, in the Scottish Highlands.

The northern end of the loch is ringed by the Black Cuillin, often wreathed in cloud. From the southern end the Scavaig River, only a few hundred yards long, discharges into a sea loch, Loch Scavaig. The loch is nearly 2 miles (3 kilometres) long and c. 400 yards (370 metres) wide.

#Cuillins #isleofskye

Loch Coruisk is reputed to be the home of a kelpie or water horse, a shape-shifting creature that can assume human form. This view taken from the western side of the Loch not far from the river’s start. No sign of a kelpie.

The island of Raasay is only a 20 minute ferry ride away from Sconser here on the Isle of Skye. We took a trip there last week. One highlight was the walk up the highest hill - Dun Caan.

walkhighlands.co.uk/skye/dunca

The view from the top has a 360° panorama looking across to the mainland and over the sea to Skye. In the far distance we could see the Outer Hebrides. This view is looking over to the Cuillins.

#Raasay #Cuillins #DunCaan #hillwalking

The upper slopes look very craggy, but the path up to it is excellent if closely followed and the flat, rock-strewn summit was soon reached. The top is marked by a cylindrical trig point; although only 443 metres high Dùn Caan is a truly stunning viewpoint. The entire eastern coast of Skye can be seen, whilst in the opposite direction is a great sweep of the mainland from the Five Sisters of Kintail to Ruadh Reidh. Boswell climbed up to the top of Dùn Caan during his tour of the Hebrides with Johnson (who remained down in Raasay House, where we stayed); he was so delighted with the view that he danced a jig on the summit. I did too.

Another stunning day and once again the Cuillins have a cloud duvet this evening.

Contrary to popular belief this is not a swarm of midges... although an understandable mistake given recent days 🙄 🙂

Our visitors seldom make the trip to Elgol to take a boat trip to the heart of the Cuillins. This painting is described as “A Loch north of Hadrian's Wall”. It is by Walter Severn (1830 – 1904), professionally a civil servant, known as a water-colour artist.

Loch Coruisk is an inland fresh-water loch, lying at the foot of the Black Cuillin in the Isle of Skye. The loch is reputed to be the home of a kelpie or water horse, a shape-shifting creature that can assume human form.

#Cuillins #skye

Sir Walter Scott visited the loch in 1814 and described it vividly: “Rarely human eye has known A scene so stern as that dread lake, With its dark ledge of barren stone...” Lord Tennyson reported more prosaically: “Loch Coruisk, said to be the wildest scene in the Highlands, I failed in seeing. After a fatiguing expedition over the roughest ground on a wet day we arrived at the banks of the loch, and made acquaintance with the extremest tiptoes of the hills, all else being thick wool-white fog.”

Sometimes the light hereabouts takes my breath away. I was out walking on a road with no traffic - it goes across the moor and on to some forestry land - and no one else around. No signs of human habitation. An eternal scene. Been like this for eons. Will be here long after I’m gone.

#Cuillins #clouds #moorland #eternal #scenery

This could be a set for a film. Probably a Western of some sort. A painted backdrop of distant mountains and clouded sky, fake looking grass. Is it always brown? Asked a friend. No, it gets really lush but in a shorter growing season.
