This is a black and white seascape photo in landscape format of a historic Hurtigruten ferry MS Lofoten, underway through Arctic waters. Breisundet, Norway (2018).

The lower three quarters of the photo is filled with dark grey sea, with small ripples caused by the wind disturbing the surface and the ship's wake. In the centre of the image is a medium sized, sea-going ferry underway from right to left and tracking diagonally across the frame. The ship is viewed obliquely, with the bow and port side in view. Our ferry has a black hull and white superstructure in common with many merchant vessels. Aft of the two anchors suspended at the bow is the ship's name in bold white letters 'Lofoten'. The small forward deck is given to cargo handling with a small crane at the front. The blunt forward superstructure is slightly rounded at the edges and has three rows of square, forward facing windows, the upper row being the ship's bridge. On top of the bridge is the usual array of radars, radio antennas and a small signal mast. Aft are three decks with a row of portholes on the black hull below. On the upper deck are two open lifeboats suspended from davits. Inboard of the lifeboats is a taller signal mast, perhaps 5-10m tall with grey halyards attached and the shipping lines pennant flying from the top. Further aft is a short funnel with a slight heat haze drifting behind. In the distant background, say 10km or more away, are a number of barren hillsides and a snow covered mountain.
