"Mining the potato-sized rocks on the seafloor called “nodules” only yields four metals of any economic consequence: nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese. Since copper and manganese are plentiful on land, deep-seafloor mining is really all about nickel and cobalt. And, unlike many have tried to claim, you cannot in fact get meaningful amounts of rare earth elements from the seafloor."

Experts alarmed over Trump’s promotion of #deepsea #mining in international waters
Critics call for an industry moratorium until more scientific data can be obtained.
On April 24, President Trump signed an #executiveorder promoting #deepseamining in the US and international waters, touting the industry’s potential to boost the country’s economic growth and national security.
Thirty-three countries are also calling for a moratorium or outright ban on deep-sea mining.

US Eyes Deep-Sea Mining to Counter China

Trump’s order allows US companies to mine deep-sea minerals, sparking interest from startups like Impossible Metals, which promises fast, eco-friendly extraction using AI robots. However, deep-sea mining risks long-term harm to marine ecosystems, raising a tough question: national security or ocean health?

❗BREAKING NEWS: Luxembourg has joined the call for a moratorium on #DeepSeaMining, becoming the 33rd country to take a stand against the risky, speculative industry.

A list of countries which have said no to deep sea mining, including Luxembourg which has just become the 33rd country to call for a moratorium on deep sea mining.

"The modern #DeepSeaMining industry was born in the 2010s, when hunger for metals required by the green transition started to grow."

So... our "#green transition" requires a hugely radicalised extractivism. Is it just me who finds that... oxymoronic?

"May 2 2025
#Trump wants to accelerate the extraction of manganese nodules from the deep seabed. The American president has signed a decree to strengthen the American ambitions for #deep sea mining. #China reacts angrily and says that Trump is completely ignoring international rules. Environmental organizations are concerned because the possible impact could cause irreversible ecological damage to life in the deep sea.
Gerard Barron, CEO of The Metals Company, is a pioneer in the exploitation of the #deep sea in international waters and previously stated in the Tegenlicht documentary 'De strijd om de diepzee' that the UN organization International Seabed Authority (ISA) cannot influence the US because the country is not a UN member. 'You can imagine that my application goes to the US and not to the ISA."
