昨年は科学を扱う媒体にとても難しい年となった。National Geographic は社員記者を全員解雇し、151年の歴史を持った Popular Science誌も休刊に追い込まれた。優秀な科学ジャーナリストが仕事を失うというだけでなく、社会が科学に対する信頼を失いつつあるように思われる。特にコロナパンデミック以降、米国民一般の科学の社会貢献に対する評価が下がっている。
しかし、科学専門知識のある記者なしでは、コロナのような問題に直面した時、政府や公機関側に記者発表などを正確に理解し、質問できる記者は数少ない。知識不足により、意味のある質問ができず、発表をそのまま記事にしてしまうことが起こりつつある。
さらにベンチャーキャピタルの投資を受けるメディアが多いため、報道内容よりも、投資に対するリターンを優先しなければならず、記事内容の質が保てるか疑問だ。 Defectorのような社員がオーナーとなっている独立系メディアにおける科学報道への期待が高まる。
