Also this requirement for them to stick to particular jurisdictions or particular routes... No, I don't like that at all. One of the huge advantages of Uber is that if you want to get to Durban from Alberton, and you can find a driver who's willing to do it, and you can afford the fare, you should be able to do it.
Okay, that's a bit of an extreme in example, but something like Joburg to Pretoria is not. Using minibus taxis, you'd have to get on and off multiple times to make that trip because the drivers have to stick to their routes. If you use Uber, you can go direct. Why would you want to prevent people from doing that? :( #ehailing #SouthAfrica`
I don't use #eHailing (or any other public transport) very much myself, because I'm fortunate to have people in my support system who can drive and are generally available to take me where I need to go. But I know that plenty of my visually impaired peers use it quite often.
These regulations are ostensibly aimed at improving safety for riders in South Africa: https://techcentral.co.za/the-sweeping-changes-coming-to-e-hailing-in-south-africa/271881/?utm_source=MastodonAfrica
I think safety's a good thing, but I'm concerned about the requirement that all vehicles used for e-hailing be branded on both sides of the car, because I know one or two people who drive for Uber and Bolt, and to my mind, the whole point of doing so is to make a little extra money on the side. Drivers use their personal vehicles, and they can decide if and when they're available for work, and which company they're driving for. The fact that, when they're not actively working, they don't necessarily have to make it known that they *do* drive for Uber/Bolt is a big plus (of course, they do have to display their PDP in the windshield, but that's fairly unobtrusive, and could mean anything).
It's also why I'm kinda against making these drivers full-time employees, with all the benefits -- and restrictions -- that that implies, because they're NOT full-time employees; they do lots of different things.
So... yeah, I dunno. What do you think? #SouthAfrica
This is not going to work and defeats the objective and will increase fares exponentially!
"Every e-hailing vehicle will have to be branded on both sides of the car, indicating what services it offers, ..."
"Like minibus taxis, ride-hailing drivers will be required to stick to their designated jurisdiction to protect local operators from competition."
