“Report suggests potential #ExcessMortality in the general population of up to 3% for the US by 2033 and 2.5% in the UK, the longest period of elevated peacetime excess mortality in the US
Key driver of excess mortality is the lingering impact of #COVID19; both as a direct cause of death, and as a contributor to #cardiovascular mortality
Reducing the impact of COVID-19 on elderly and vulnerable populations will be key to excess mortality returning to zero” med-mastodon.com/@cbarbermd/11

Previous studies showed that Uruguay was one of few countries with fewer deaths than expected in the year 2020. What happened in the following years? This paper shows how the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded in this Latin American country from 2020 to 2022. #Uruguay #COVID-19 #excessmortality #lifeexpectancy

"We estimate that the average [hurricane] generates 7,000–11,000 excess deaths, exceeding the average of 24 immediate deaths reported in government statistics. Tracking the effects of 501 historical storms, we compute that the.. mortality burden ...is equal to roughly 3.2–5.1% of all deaths"

Important 🧵 by Dr. Jerome Adams (@JeromeAdamsMD on Twitter) on the recent SwissRE report on excess mortality & Covid: threadreaderapp.com/thread/18360... #Covid #ExcessMortality

"The US reported an average 1500 COVID-19 deaths a week for 2023 – comparable to fentanyl or firearm deaths.”

This wasn’t from health officials but insurance actuaries.🤯

Covid-19 may lead to longest period of peacetime excess mortality, says new report..."

@KarenCutter "It's encouraging that each successive COVID-19 wave has, so far, resulted in fewer deaths than the previous one. However, we think that COVID#19 is likely to cause some #ExcessMortality for several years to come, either as a direct cause of death or a contributing factor to other causes such as heart disease."

"In our view, the 'new normal' level of mortality is likely to be higher than it would have been if we hadn't had the pandemic."

#ExcessMortality

The two summer median trends I constructed continue to reflect weekly mortality very well. Mortality runs way below the inadequate FSO expectation, of course.

I expect mortality to pick up, should Covid incidences continue to rise.

First 3 years of COVID-19 had 3M excess deaths in the West: study - National | Globalnews.ca globalnews.ca/news/10541434/ex#ExcessMortality has remained high in the Western world for three consecutive years, despite the implementation of containment measures and #COVID19 vaccines,” the study authors in Netherlands concluded.

“ governments and policymakers “need to thoroughly investigate underlying causes of persistent excess mortality and evaluate their health crises policies.”

#excessdeaths #ExcessMortality Anyone know what is going on here? What is the reason for increase in cardiovascular cause as cause of deaths in UK?

The ONS has created a new methodology for calculating #ExcessMortality . It uses age brackets.

We don't have the details yet, but apparently it cuts the excess mortality dramatically.

I am naturally sceptical as to the timing of this, but here's the link to their announcement:

Excess mortality in Australia 2020-2023

Mortality is 6.1% higher than expected for the first eight months of 2023.

This compares to 14.1% for the first eight months of 2022.

When there were strong restrictions and people wore masks (2020) there was a positive outcome.

The year the restrictions were abandoned and people stopped looking out for each other, the excess mortality skyrocketed.

@Australian_News

Excess mortality is typically defined as the difference between the observed number of deaths in a specified time period and the expected numbers of deaths in that same time period.

The #CDC seems to have stopped publishing excess mortality #data, but I found usmortality.com/

It uses a 2015-19, meaning pre-pandemic, baseline. Data for the US as a whole, or state-by-state (plus separate New York City info).

“Total #ExcessMortality for the first seven months of 2023 is 6% (95% confidence interval: 5% to 8%) or +6,500 deaths – i.e., there were 6,500 more deaths than expected if the pandemic had not happened.
Half of the excess mortality is due to deaths from #COVID19 (+3,250 deaths), with another +1,150 COVID-19 related deaths, while the remaining +2,100 excess deaths had no mention of COVID-19 on the death certificate.” bird.makeup/@karencutter4/1720

Checking in on excess mortality in Quebec

DR. LISA IANNATTONE @LISA_IANNATTONE • MAY 16, 2023

A pandemic ends when people stop dying.

Data up to early April 2023 now available. Excess mortality in 0-49 year olds has yet to slow down. Week of Apr 1: 59% excess deaths. Week of April 8, 2023: 71% excess deaths. Folks that is the single worst week of the entire pandemic.
