I had a dry and cool, then wet and cold, then somewhat sunny mountain bike ride this morning south of Boulder on Marshall Mesa, where evidence of the catastrophic fire from a few years ago is still seen on the trunks of the still-living trees and the heat-cracked sandstone near the trail. It was a lovely day to be on the bike, despite the wind coming off the front range, and I am excited to explore more of the trail there soon.

The clouds were being very dramatic over Boulder’s Flatirons today. Rain off to the north, blue skies trying to peek out above me. The golden grass all around the trail.

I’ve lived here 30+ years and today was the first time I ever hiked up to (near) the top of the 3rd Flatiron. It was steep, it was awesome, and my knees are now jello. 🥾🌞

From near the top of the 3rd Flatiron, this view includes most of the tilted 2nd Flatiron rock formation on the left side of the photo. On the right side, the park and city are some 1500 feet below me. Beyond that, the flat eastern plains stretch far out toward the horizon. Partly cloudy skies above.

A view from the back side of the 3rd Flatiron looking upward. The back side is a couple hundred feet of mostly vertical, layered red sandstone covered in places with gray and bright green lichen, with pine trees at the base of the rocks where they disappear into the ground below. Deep blue skies with a few clouds behind the rocks jutting into the sky.

Hiking back down the trail, which is mostly made of bazillions of rock steps. My rainbow hiking shoes are visible just below a sign on the trail that reads, “Climbing Descent,” with an arrow pointing downward across all the rocks. Off to the left is the massive slab of the tilted 2nd Flatiron with a few pine trees around the base. Off in the far distance is a peek of the city and flat plains stretching out toward the horizon. A slice of partly cloudy, blue sky is near the top.

A gorgeous view of the Flatirons rocks across the grassy meadows from the beginning of the gravel hiking trail.
