I had a vision, of having little wire wrapped clasps for my folk costume projects. As soon as I got home I made some.

These are called maljor in Swedish, and they’re used to lace upp bodices in the folk costume world. I don’t know that wire wrapping is common, mostly it’s pewter or silver casts. But we do have a folkloric tradition of wire work, called luffarslöjd - hobo crafting. With how many different folklore versions that have existed I can’t think this is the strangest there’s ever been. Hell, I even saw someone doing beer can tabs as maljor last week. Creativity, baby!

I used to think I couldn’t come up with spontaneous art ideas. Like I was stunted and naturally didn’t have a sense of vision.
Turns out I was just untrained, and what feels like an artistic gift from the outside is actually a mental muscle that can be trained. Now my problem is I have too many ideas instead.
One of them was this: a little folklore piece inspired by Bohusdräkten in western Sweden. It’s meant for one of my nieces, unasked for but hopefully appreciated. It’s adjustable, from the lacing to extra material in the shoulders and waist. So hopefully she can wear it for a few years.
In Sweden we have this debate about headwear with folk costume. To wear or not to wear. But inspired by Norwegian tradition I decided to make her a little hair band with lace in a matching material to wear with the dress. And the thought struck me that adults could wear that too! I’m trying to make it a thing.
I’ve not weaved the fabrics or constructed the zipper but I’ve made everything else myself. The embroidery, the lacing, the lace, the hooks for closing, even the aglets to thread the string in front.
I hope she and her parents like it and that maybe when she is too big for it she can lend it to her cousin or potential siblings.

Nationalism is _really_ not my thing, but any excuse to wear folk costume is a good one.
So, on Sweden's national day you get to see one version of my folk costume, from Åse&Viste härad. This is from last Midsummer. It is raining cats and dogs now, and I'm a bit unwell, so I might not get dressed today.

This was my outfit for my first museum exhibition opening. I was accepted as one of the crafts people for the local museum salon, with some lace pieces that I hav posted on here. I wanted to stand out as a crafts person, so I wore a folk costume handmade by me and my grandmother. The head wear is not quite traditional, but most people don’t wear proper head pieces these days.

Mitt barn har snöat in på #cosplay. Jag vill börja sy kläder. (Och en #folkdräkt (häradsdräkt? bygdedräkt?) vilket väl tekniskt sett är kläder men en liten aning överkurs.) Så eh, om inte livet i allmänhet var tillräckligt mycket av ett money sink så har vi hittat ett par nya nu.

Excerperat bouppteckningar och fört in allt textil- och dräkt relaterat i kalkylark . Den senaste, från Långe Larsgården i Sparlösa 1791 hade 136 klädesplagg, 17 olika textilredskap och 22 poster med olika tyger, garn, hemvävda band och häcklat lin. Pust.

Tänkte fota två handsydda hängselsärkar som jag gjort. Jag gillar ju att fota, men problemet med att fota kläder är att jag själv måste vara med på bild. Hålla reda på ljus, skärpa, plaggen, mig själv och inte minst den bångstyriga luggen. Svårt!

ENG: I did these two handsewn shifts and thought I would take some photos of them. I like photography but I don't like to try to capture myself when I do it. It is just too much to think about: The light, the focus, the garments, me, my hair wich almost never behaves as I wish it to.

A new headdress that I made during a course recently. It’s inspired by a traditional Swedish folk crown, called a Lad. Mine is not very traditional, other than it being traditional to make it as shiny as possible on a wool base.

I was inspired by the myth of Argos Panoptes, the giant who have his eyes to the peacock feathers in Greek mythology. You look at my hat, my hat looks right back.

To be honest this was an amazingly fun stash bust and I got to try out mirror sewing and beading in ways I hadn’t before. 10/10 will be doing another one.

Spent most of the day in Slottsskogen with friend and neighbour Anna. First we left her folk costume to be sold at the folk costume market at Gräfsnäsgården, then we went for a walk to the hanami in the Botanical gardens. Then back to Gräfsnäsgården when they opened for selling, and met up with my friend Jenny . I bought a cap and some hand woven fabric.

Ett fynd. Gammalt och slitet men vansinnigt vackert: ett halskläde till leksandsdräkt. Jag skulle gissa på att det är från första halvan av 1800-talet. Handspunnet garn, handvävt tyg, fantastiska broderier. Någon har tagit alla de där stygnen, varenda ett. Jag blir lite matt faktiskt.

ENG: Nech kerchief from Leksand, I think it is from first half if the 19th century. Hand soun, hand woven and fantastic embroidery.
