After 20+ years in (with a 4 year break in between), the process of weaning myself off it has begun.

Earlier on this week, I decided to no longer post new content into my LI profile, while I’m starting that slow process of enticing people in my own networks there to move over to the instead, and free themselves from the tyranny of the algorithm(s).

It's going to take a while, I know I'll be paying a price for it, but I also feel it's long overdue. So

And you know what's even more hilarious? I have got 5 followers in my account and I get a whole lot more traction / 'engagement' than in with 3k contacts in there posting multiple times per week.

What does that say about the process LI is currently going through that most people just can't see it? 😱

Yeah, I know,

And that probably means to do some kind of re-Introduction at some point. I am not ready just yet for it though. I feel I first need to unlearn a whole bunch of shitty behaviours & habits from I've acquired over time to re-learn when I first fell in love with 25 years ago.

Like I was saying ... Start small, build from there. One toot at a time.

This is such a good, important article - absolutely spot on in so many ways.

“The Technology That Actually Runs Our World

The most dominant algorithms aren’t the ones choosing what songs Spotify serves you.”

“Maybe the most worrying thing about algorithms is that they give institutional actors a degree of plausible deniability.”

“When artists argue that their song didn’t catch a tailwind from the right keywords, or that their book isn’t selling well because it didn’t reach the right influencers, what they’re really doing is expressing fear that there is no room for artists to exist anymore.”

“Some technologies really are eroding the viability of public pursuits, and perhaps enjoying or criticizing cultural works based on their merits could help us focus our attention a bit.”

I watched one video about Karen Carpenter and now YouTube thinks I am Karen Carpenter's number one fan and can't get enough of Karen Carpenter. #FuckTheAlgorithm.

This is icky. I’m not a creator, just a consumer. And it already annoys me that YouTube tries to shove red pill right wing stuff down my throat because I watch a lot of videos that are the opposite of that.

But now the algorithm is suggesting “inspiration” to creators telling them what they should make videos about & even suggesting titles for them? Ew.

Please don’t allow the algorithm to tell you what you should be talking about. Please don’t do that.

From the link:
“A new creative partner
Coming up with fresh, engaging ideas can be a challenge. So we’re giving the Inspiration Tab in YouTube Studio a makeover, creating a brainstorming buddy powered by generative AI. It’ll help curate suggestions that you can mold into fully-fledged projects with video ideas, titles, thumbnails, and outlines to match your style.”

need to get myself off Spotify, though it's useful as a constantly changing alarm song, woke me up today with youtube.com/watch?v=FuA2FStlv1 #fuckTheAlgorithm

been listening to Eruption Radio a lot since seeing @JoshMurray recommend it. eruptionradio.uk/site/

they play great stuff, club sounds of the mid-nineties interspersed with cheery adverts for whelk stalls in Essex pub car parks

This video is fantastic. The creator manages to express much of what I’ve been thinking (I may have punched the air when he gets to The Intent), except in a coherent way.

A bunch of references to the #Demoscene , which really encapsulates why I’ve loved the scene all these years.

And yes, #fuckthealgorithm . mastodon.gamedev.place/@grumpy

"New ideas seem risky, confusing, even stupid, and we're now beholden to the algorithm to decide if they make sense and should be added to the great palace of human thought."
