"During World War Two, conscientious objectors in the US and the UK were asked to volunteer for medical research. In one project in the US, young men were starved for six months to help experts decide how to treat victims of mass starvation"
"The regime was tough - during the six months they were being starved, the men were expected to walk or run 22 miles (36 kilometres) every week, expending over 1,000 calories more than they consumed each day."

On Saturday we concluded our 3-day conference focusing on preindustrial public health in South Asia. It was a fantastic opportunity to explore and propose what we hope will be a worthwhile line of (comparative) research for the subcontinent and beyond. Recordings to come.

The Inaugural Session of the International Conference on Preventative Care in the Preindustrial World, with Guy Geltner introducing the methodology of healthscaping, and the field of the #preindustrial public health at large, has now started. 👏

"Beaumont continued to experiment on St-Martin off and on until 1833, performing an estimated 200 experiments over a period of 10 years.
St-Martin allowed the experiments to be conducted, not as an act to repay Beaumont for keeping him alive but rather because Beaumont had the illiterate St-Martin sign a contract to work as a servant."
