To fill the boat's water tank at Canal & River Trust water points I use a garden hose (a.k.a. hosepipe) and a Waterways key.

It's now so cold, an unrolled hose laying across the towpath will stay stiffly coiled. Despite my verbal warnings, someone got snagged.

There's little traffic, but when it comes, it's couples from each direction, plus a cyclist, all 5 crossing the hose at the same moment.
