View from high in the Marmot Basin ski area looking down on the burned out and snow covered valley south of the town of Jasper. The far side is mostly burned but there are two large areas that didn’t burn stretching down towards the valley.

Drive up to Marmot Basin is pretty spooky for the first half. All burned out.

Driving up the Marmot roads first steep pitch. On the left is a steep slope where all but a few of the trees have fallen in the fire.

On higher section looking south down the valley. Here the fire burned so hot almost nothing has been left standing.

Sill south down the road before turning up to the higher mountain. Here also the trees have been levelled.

More tree standing has we moved higher up the mountain.

Back from #volunteering in #Jasper. I am still processing everything, but am so grateful I got to give back to the community. The people I met on this op are nothing short of amazing - they move mountains to help others, an experience that'll stay with me for a long, long time.

Oh FFS! I hate it when the interviewer hasn’t done their research and neither has the interviewee. Mark Connolly on CBC Edmonton AM just asked Ron Hallman, the head of Parks Canada, if there was any intention to put fire breaks in north of Jasper.

There are already fire breaks north of Jasper! Neither of them knew that.

The wildfire is no longer Out-of-Control, and is now classified as Being Held.

It is safe to return to the town of Jasper and resume normal activities. Other than the townsite, Jasper National Park remains closed

Banff Sunshine Village just shared this photo of just how close the #JasperFire got to Marmot Basin. They said Marmot will reopen this winter.

Looking at satellite imagery from August 11th around Jasper and you can see how close the fire came to Marmot Basin. Looks like the road up acted as a bit of firebreak.

@AmeliasBrain @DavidM_yeg Jasper did a lot of thinning of pine beetle trees around the town and clearing west of town. The difficulty is they try to avoid equipment that would damage the forest floor so all the cleared areas were done by hand and they hauled the wood out with horses. They use the wood for their trail projects, benches, picnic tables fences, etc. I think they also sell some of it speciality wood shops as the patterning caused by the beetles is pretty.
