A good day of skiing today at Marmot. It was gray and cloudy but not too cold. While they can use some fresh snow there was still lots of decent skiing to be had. Now my legs hurt. Driving home tomorrow morning.

I got to enjoy a #RockHounding day with my lovely & brilliant partner (@333mcggg on X) recently, at the tiny community of #GemHill. We were out there looking mostly for #CommonOpal, but saw plenty of nice #jasper & #agate, as well. I know it isn't a history post, but you'll live!

and in the midst of all that devastation: this sticker, courtesy of the WA United Professional Firefighters Union, whose teams flew here to help save structures during the big one. since this was found on a dumpster near the Maligne Lake boatbouse, I assume they were working that area - and saved the historic boathouse. thank you 🙏

my wife and i haven’t hiked Jasper national park since the wildfire.

yesterday we explored parts of the Maligne river, wondering how it had fared.

while the townsite is in the midst of recovery (the SW portion) - rebuilding homes and commercial spaces - the view at Maligne Overlook is a different story

i come from a part of the subarctic where wildfire is a normal occurrence, and patches of scorched forest snaking through miles of evergreen is a sign of a healthy ecosystem. but this is just shocking to see in person.

this was hot, fast, broad, annihilating fire. not just roots or crowns or trunks. *everything*.

there is a new beauty here - but i admit it’s very hard to see.

A very wide panorama of a mountain evergreen forest that has been completely decimated. Only then matchsticks are left of foot-wide trunks. Half of the trees have fallen over with the roots exposed. The view faces south, with the sun cresting over distant mountains.
