The Majestic African Bush Elephant: A Marvel of Nature

In the heart of Africa, a grand assembly of African bush elephants gathers. This occurs against the breathtaking backdrop of the ever-changing Sand River. They partake in a diverse feast for about one to two hours, savoring a banquet of grass, leaves, bark, fruit, and lush foliage. These magnificent creatures, known as African Bush Elephants, are the largest land animals on Earth, weighing between 10,000 and 13,000 pounds, standing at an impressive 10 to 13 feet tall at the shoulder.

https://youtu.be/m3TksZVeQc0

Size and Diet: African Bush Elephants are renowned for their colossal size and voracious appetites. These gentle giants can consume an astonishing 220-660 pounds of food daily and drink as much as 50 gallons of water. Remarkably, their head alone accounts for a quarter of their total body weight.

Habitat and Range: These magnificent creatures call a wide range of habitats home, from the expansive savannas to arid deserts and lush rainforests. They can be found inhabiting 37 African countries, showcasing their adaptability and resilience.

Social Structures: African bush elephants are not just solitary wanderers; they thrive in intricate social structures. They often form matriarchal family groups, led by an older, experienced female. These familial bonds play a crucial role in their survival and well-being.

Lifespan and Threats: African elephants are known for their longevity, with some individuals living up to an impressive 70 years. However, they face a multitude of threats, including relentless poaching for their valuable ivory and habitat loss. These factors pose a significant challenge to their continued existence in the wild.

Communication: Communication among African Bush Elephants is a symphony of sounds. They employ a variety of vocalizations, including trumpets, rumbles, and purrs. Additionally, they utilize infrasound, which falls below the range of human hearing, for long-distance communication.

Tusks and Trunk: Both male and female African Bush Elephants boast tusks, elongated incisor teeth that can grow to several feet in length. These versatile appendages serve various purposes, from foraging to defense. Equally impressive is their trunk, a marvel of nature with over 40,000 muscles and tendons.

Seasonal Migrations: Some populations of African Bush Elephants engage in awe-inspiring seasonal migrations, covering vast distances in search of food and water. These journeys exemplify their adaptability and tenacity in the face of changing environmental conditions.

Conservation Status: African Bush Elephant, though resilient, are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This designation is due to the persistent threats of poaching, habitat fragmentation, and human-wildlife conflict. Efforts to protect and conserve these majestic creatures are of paramount importance.

The African Bush Elephant is a testament to the grandeur of the natural world. Their immense size, complex social structures, and remarkable adaptability make them a marvel of nature. However, they are also a species in peril, facing threats that challenge their very existence. By understanding and appreciating these incredible creatures, we can work together to ensure their survival for future generations.

Roaring Lion

https://youtu.be/l65q9fjZM5Y

This morning, on our game drive through Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, just a stone’s throw from Kruger National Park, we had the extraordinary privilege of encountering a majestic lion!

We quietly traversed the breathtaking landscape. A hushed excitement enveloped us. We spotted the mighty lion near a serene, shimmering body of water. His powerful presence left us spellbound. He moved gracefully through his realm. Every step exuded a timeless aura of dominance and elegance.

For several awe-inspiring minutes, we were captivated by his regal demeanor, his golden mane glistening in the morning sun. And then, the moment we had been waiting for—his thunderous roars! The primal sound resonated through the air, vibrating deep within our souls, reminding us of the raw beauty and primal power of the wilderness.

This was more than just a safari. It was an immersion into the heart of the wild. It was a chance to connect with nature in its purest form. Our hearts swelled with gratitude for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. We were humbled by the profound magic of the animal kingdom.

Can you believe how loud a lion’s roar is? What do you think it’s trying to say?

Umkumbe Safari Game Drive Highlights

https://youtu.be/Ugw5IA1rXvQ

Our first South African safari at Umkumbe Safari River Lodge was an unforgettable adventure. The lodge is nestled near Kruger National Park in Sabi Sands Game Reserve, where the wild roams free due to the unfenced boundaries. Over three thrilling days, we witnessed all of the Big 5—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo—and I captured three of them on video. The rest of the Big 5 were immortalized in images at our next camp.

Getting to Umkumbe was a breeze, thanks to a quick flight from Joburg to Skukuza Airport and a seamless transfer to the lodge. During our transfer, we spotted a wide variety of animals, from elephants to lions, thanks to our driver’s sharp eyes and willingness to stop so we could take photos and videos. Our timely morning arrival allowed us to enjoy a delicious lunch before embarking on our first afternoon game drive.

The lodge’s riverside location provided a front-row seat to a procession of wildlife quenching their thirst and grazing on the riverbanks. From our room’s patio, we were mesmerized by the parade of elephants, giraffes, impalas, monkeys, and hyenas, setting the tone for an extraordinary trip.

After our exceptional stay at Umkumbe, we moved on to our next camp (nThambo Tree Camp), which I’ll detail in upcoming posts. Then, we ventured towards the water for the highly anticipated annual Sardine run. Trust me, I’ll get back to my underwater images soon!

Juvenile African Bush Elephants at Play

https://youtu.be/yAqpIiYPAkk

In the heart of the wilderness, a juvenile elephant exuded an abundance of vitality, engaging in spirited play with a younger companion. In this enchanted moment, nature seemed to catch the contagion of their youthful enthusiasm, moving in rhythm with their exuberance.

Moved by the spontaneity of this scene, I found myself transported to the pulsating beats of Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.” Its infectious rhythm seemed to mirror the vibrant dance of the elephants, creating an unexpected yet seamless connection between the world of music and the heart of the wild.

Eager to immortalize this harmonious convergence, I turned to Final Cut Pro, applying subtle color corrections to the video to accentuate the natural beauty of the elephants’ realm. The hues of the savanna emerged in their full glory, echoing the vibrant spirits of these magnificent creatures. Then, I transitioned to Logic Pro X, a realm of musical possibilities unfurled before me. Guided by inspiration, I set out to recreate the iconic baseline from Michael’s composition, which only took me 2 hours to figure out… Pitiful!

If the video does not include any music, it is quite likely that YouTube has imposed copyright restrictions, which could result in its potential unavailability.

The South African Safari Continues

Continuing our journey, we depart from Umkumbe Safari Lodge and travel northwest to nThambo Tree Camp, our next destination in the wild expanse of Kruger National Park. The transfer took just a little over three hours by van. We made it in time for lunch and the afternoon game drive.

[Click on an image to enlarge]

The decision to try two different camps on opposite sides of Kruger National Park was wise, as it significantly increased our chances of encountering the famous “Big 5” game animals, consisting of the lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros. These magnificent creatures are some of the most sought-after sightings in any safari. By exploring different regions of the park, we maximize the diversity of the wildlife we encounter.

Upon reaching nThambo Tree Camp, we immediately noticed the distinct difference in size compared to Umkumbe. nThambo is a much smaller and more intimate camp, boasting only five tree houses. This exclusivity lends itself to a more tranquil and secluded experience, allowing us to immerse ourselves fully in the serenity of the bush.

The camp’s unique feature, the tree houses, offers a remarkable perspective to appreciate the surrounding nature. Perched high up among the branches, we feel at one with the wilderness, hearing the sounds of the wild throughout the day and night. The views from these elevated vantage points are unparalleled, granting us the opportunity to witness wildlife up close and personal, undisturbed in their natural habitats.

As we venture out on game drives from nThambo, we are greeted by the abundance of wildlife that call this part of the park their home. We are delighted to spot graceful giraffes elegantly moving through the savannah, mighty elephants bathing and drinking at watering holes, and elegant zebras grazing peacefully with their striking black-and-white stripes. The air is filled with the melodies of various bird species, enhancing the magical atmosphere of the safari.

The nThambo experience is not only about the wildlife but also about unwinding and rejuvenating in the heart of nature. The camp’s peaceful ambiance and personalized service allow us to relax fully and escape the hustle and bustle of the modern world.

As the days go by, we are captivated by the sights and sounds of Kruger National Park, cherishing every moment we spend in this unique corner of the world. The memories we make, the encounters with wildlife, and the sense of awe at the grandeur of nature will stay with us forever, making this safari an unforgettable adventure.

Images From My First Safari

We planned a scuba diving trip to observe the annual sardine run off the coast of South Africa. Before we began the sardine run, we decided to spend a week on safari. This allowed us to see some of the fantastic wildlife that South Africa is home to, such as lions, elephants, and rhinos.

Our safari adventure began at the enchanting Umkumbe Safari Lodge, where the allure of the wilderness greeted us with open arms. Little did we know that the universe had an abundance of surprises in store for us. Within the first two days of our safari, we were blessed with the extraordinary privilege of encountering the “Big 5” – the ultimate safari dream come true!

As we made our way from the airport to the lodge, we were already graced with the majestic presence of two of the Big 5, leaving us eager and excited for what lay ahead. But the highlight of our entire safari experience was an awe-inspiring sighting of a magnificent pride of lions. The moment was indescribable; their regal posture and powerful presence stirred something deep within us.

From the graceful gazelles to the majestic elephants, and from the elusive leopards to the mighty lions, the safari was an enchanting exploration of Africa’s diverse and captivating fauna. Our days were filled with awe and wonder, as we observed these magnificent creatures in their natural habitats, leaving us with cherished memories that will forever hold a place in our hearts.

Postcard from Africa: Mlondozi Dam

The in the other afternoon.

A tangible sense of silence, of peace. Just the snorting of hippos, and the call of birds. You can hear the grass rustle over a kilometre away.

A late-afternoon view from up a hill, overlooking a dam reflecting a hazy grey-blue sky, surrounded by low scrubby bush. There is a succulent tree silhouetted on the right.

A traffic jam I didn’t mind.
I was on my way to a customer that had their offices inside the Kruger Park near the Phalaborwa gate.

Traffic Jam:
Several vehicles are stopped or moving slowly as an elephant walks along the road. Lush greenery and tall grass are visible on both sides. The sky is overcast.

Some of the other folks had already seen Red-billed Buffalo Weaver and I was getting anxious. Then, at last! With its red beak and red feet, I’ve no idea why it reminded me of @cornishchoughs.bsky.social 😃
