The government completely rejected the union's proposal yesterday, claiming "a major divide" from what the government is willing to spend, and have already announced that once the government goes back to work (reconvenes from their 5 month summer break near the end of October), that they will legislate the teachers back to work. -_-

At least the labour movement has learned an important lesson during the last few national strikes. Refusing a back-to-work order will get results quick, while accepting one will entrench everyone in costly labour action forever. So I hope that Alberta teachers take the better option when our authoritarian government takes away their Charter right to collective bargaining and strong arms them into giving up the fight to secure a properly-funded public education system to ensure our children's learning success.

Note the language, how the government is represented as just "the government" (and not TEBA), but the striking teachers bringing job action is represented by the government as only "the union representing teachers". This is to enforce the UCP's propaganda that they are butting heads with an elite union bargaining committee that is "out of touch" with the 51,000 striking teachers, ignoring the fact that 90% of teachers voted to reject their insulting offer and 20,000 teachers and members of the public showed up in EACH of our two major cities before the strike to rally for their cause. The ONLY ones who are out of touch is the UCP. Almost everyone wants to save our public education system except the UCP and their backers.

Nate Horner says there still a major divide between what the union representing striking teachers is asking for and what the government is willing to spend.

The provincewide strike, affecting about 750,000 students across 2,500 schools, entered its seventh day Wednesday.
