Ancient DNA reveals Maya collapse was a transformation, not extinction

A new genetic study is rewriting the history of the collapse of the Classic Maya civilization, revealing that even though city-states such as Copán and others experienced severe population depletion around 1,200 years ago, the Maya themselves never disappeared. Published on May 28 in Current Biology, the research, led by Shigeki Nakagome, an assistant professor of genomic medicine at Trinity College Dublin, sheds light on the continuity and resilience of the Maya people through one of the most dramatic societal transformations of ancient times...

Chopped-up human remains in Guatemala’s ‘blood cave’ reveal ancient Maya sacrificial rituals

In a flooded cave in the north of Guatemala, archaeologists discovered gruesome evidence of human sacrifice rituals among the ancient Maya. Under the ancient city of Dos Pilas, the location known as Cueva de Sangre, or “Blood Cave,” contains over a hundred fragments of human remains—a significant number of which show traces of violent trauma—dating to nearly 2,000 years ago.

The cave was first documented in the early 1990s as part of a broader survey of underground chambers used by the Maya between 400 BCE and  250 CE. But only recently has serious research begun to analyze the macabre remains that lie scattered across its floor. Archaeologists now believe the cave was a ritual center for sacrificial offerings intended to appease the Maya rain god, Chaac...

Ancient secrets of Maya blue revealed: a second method for creating the iconic pigment discovered

An amazing new find is expanding our understanding of Maya Blue—one of the most enigmatic and enduring pigments of the ancient world. Dean E. Arnold, adjunct curator of anthropology at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and professor emeritus at Wheaton College, has found a second ancient method of producing the pigment, gaining new insights into Maya technology, spirituality, and artistry.

Initially identified by modern researchers in 1931 at Chichén Itzá, Maya Blue is an uncommon hybrid pigment made of organic indigo pigment and the inorganic clay mineral palygorskite. Its vivid color is often described as comparable to the Caribbean Sea or the bright blue sky over the Yucatán Peninsula. Unlike traditional indigo, which faded with age and exposure in old times, Maya Blue resists alkalines, acids, and even tropical humidity. Some of the samples remain stuck to stone carvings at Chichén Itzá today—unfaded after more than a thousand years of enduring hurricanes and jungle heat...
