In 1999 a fossil that had been illegally removed from China was revealed to the world in a press conference held by National Geographic. This fossil was named Archaeoraptor.

6 months later, in 2000, National Geographics revealed it might be a composite. It was found to be a composite of three fossils, the tail of Microraptor, the body of Yanornis. Some elements might belong to a third species as well.

January: Microraptor and the Flowers. I started this year out making paleoart watercolours and never really stopped. This one is about a Microraptor investigating the first flowers she’s ever seen. The flowers are Lingyuananthus, a lovely little fossil flower described in an even lovelier paper that was not behind a paywall for once.
