Today in History July 25, 1965: Bob Dylan went electric at the Newport Folk Festival, accompanied by Mike Bloomfield and Barry Goldberg, from the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. It was the first time he had performed with electric instruments and signaled a major change in folk and rock music. Many purists in the audience booed. Pete Seeger said he wanted to take an axe to the cables because it was so loud and distorted. He later claimed that the sound quality was poor and he merely wanted audience members to hear Dylan’s voice. Dylan claimed that Seeger’s response was like a dagger in his heart. In 2013, Dylan’s Newport guitar sold for $965,000.

Fun time at the first ever Newport Folk Fest All Star Game at Cardines Field. Team Goodman vs Team Morby all to benefit free music lessons for RI youth.

Margo Price sang the anthem, The Deslondes set up in the right field press box to play Centerfield and Take Me Out to the Ballgame and Jay Sweet slingshotted free t shirts over the stands and into the street.

That increase is due in large part to indie-rock duo Illiterate Light and their bike-powered stage—and in 2025, #IlliterateLight's #RoadToNewport ride, starting July 7 in #HarrisonburgVirginia, continuing through #BaltimoreMaryland July 13, #AsburyParkNewJersey July 18, reaching #NewportRhodeIsland July 25. Bike valet by Bike Newport is provided at the festival.

Illiterate Light fans can follow their 600-mile route and attend live shows along the way (as well as at Newport).
