Listening to 'Science, Not Fiction' by Orange Goblin.

This was released in 2024 and was their last album before they called it quits. I think it's pretty good.

I actually went and saw Orange Goblin this year, but didn’t listen to their new album.

The opening track is called ā€˜The Fire At The Centre Of The Earth Is Mine’ and having just heard it, think it’s pretty good. I’m gonna listen to the rest of this album called ā€˜Science, Not Fiction’.

Blue Heron – Everything Fades Review

By Carcharodon

Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Blue Heron dropped their debut record, Ephemeral, in 2022. I remember briefly listening to it at the time, but it didn’t leave much of an impression. Dipping in again now, I think that was very much a Me Problem because Ephemeral was a solid slab of desert stoner rock, tinged with both blues and grunge. And I slept on it. Stoner is a genre mired in mediocrity but, for me, when a band hits its stride, it’s so goddamned satisfying. Bands like Kyuss, whom we’ll be hearing more about below,1 had this ability to just carry me away, born on the languid desert winds. Now back with their sophomore record, Everything Fades, whatever sort of journey Blue Heron wants to take me on, it’s one I’m determined not to sleep on!

On Everything Fades, Blue Heron picks up where they left off. And why not? They set themselves a great base to build on and have done so in every respect. Most of the material falls slap bang in the middle of a sand-swept bridge, leading between the lands of Kyuss and Sleep. Huge, distended guitars from Mike Chavez (ex-Spiritu) rumble and flow across a world drowning in reverb and languid melodies, while Steve Schmidlapp’s bass thrums its way through the open dunes. There’s also more than a bit of early Clutch (opener, ā€œNull Geodesicā€) and Orange Goblin (closer, ā€œFlight of the Heronā€) infusing the smoky sound on show. Not satisfied with the desert, however, Blue Heron skilfully weaves in Dirt-era Alice in Chains (particularly on ā€œSwansongā€), adding extra depth to their songwriting. The star of the show, however, is singer Jadd Schickler (also ex-Spiritu), who shows himself to be hugely versatile. His vocals range from a beautifully rich, bourbon-drenched husk that evokes Sleep’s Al Cisneros and early-career Neil Fallon, to a delicate bluesy style, which was uncannily familiar.2

Everything Fades truly kicks off the moment that Schickler’s gritty voice is first unleashed. After that, Blue Heron never looks back. The Kyuss worship is both clear and very well done (ā€œDinosaurā€ and ā€œTrepidationā€) but there’s a lot more going on than that. Both Jam Room-era Clutch and the rougher edge of early Down, or even Neurosis, shine through in places. It’s the title track that showcases Blue Heron’s absolute best, as the song glides effortlessly from Kyuss’ desert blues, Ricardo Sanchez’s drums awakening slowly from a sun-drenched daydream, to kick off into big, Orange Goblin stoner territory. At the three-minute mark, Schickler drops down from his coarse bellow, which perfectly tweeters on the verge of cracking, to a delicate croon, which reminded me most of Mark Lanegan.

Coming in at a tight 38 minutes, there is very little fat on Everything Fades, which is a welcome surprise for a stoner record.3 Indeed, Blue Heron show themselves to be very talented songwriters, with nearly everything they try coming off, feeling fluid, organic, and crucially, effortless. It has to be said that ā€œClearmountainā€ feels a bit light on ideas and notably weaker than the rest of the songs, with Schickler’s normally stellar voice also feeling like it’s straining. However, the lyrics for that track properly got me for some reason, as Schickler husks ā€œDon’t stand upon my grave and weep, I am not there; I do not sleep, I am the thousand winds that blow.ā€4 That slight misstep apart, the thing that really holds back Everything Fades is the production. At a shocking DR2, it often sounds shallow and crushed, with the drums eating up the space that should be available for the guitars (see ā€œBellwetherā€ and ā€œFlight of the Heron,ā€ in particular). This is a real shame as Sanchez’s work behind the kit is solid and I love Chavez’s guitar tone, which sounds mellow and organic.

With Everything Fades, Blue Heron has improved on Ephemeral, showing themselves to be skilled songwriters. The songs flow and the album is at that perfect length where each time the last notes of ā€œFight of the Heronā€ fade out you’re left wanting just a little bit more. Undoubtedly a very good record, if Everything Fades had better production, it could easily have been a great one.

Orange Goblin – Science, Not Fiction Review

By Steel Druhm

Well, look who it is! The barroom-brawling, tooth-loosening thugs in Orange Goblin are back after a 5-year hiatus to re-club you with their bruising biker/stoner doom on 10th album Science, Not Fiction. I’ve missed these uncouth characters too. Their burly blend of rock, doom, and metal always resonated with me and almost always makes me want to overindulge in low-rent spirits while making bad decisions. Much more in-your-face than most stoner music, Orange Goblin always grasped at meaner elements like the southern grit of Corrosion of Conformity and the biker bar menace of Fireball Ministry. Powered by the whiskey-rough bellows of Ben Ward and the raucous riffage of Joe Hoare, the Goblin sound has always been the confrontational poke in the chest before the punches fly, and that’s a great place to park your hog. With a new bassist in tow, will the band change gears after so long a rest, or will the brass knuckle sensibilities still rule the day?

As has long been the custom with Orange Goblin albums, they open with a killer mission statement on ā€œThe Fire at the Centre of the Earth is Mine.ā€ It’s a major kick in the teeth with all the classic OG elements front and center. Beefy riffs come flying with bad intentions and Ben Ward sounds massive and pissed off. Imagine Clutch at their most jacked up then multiply by 10 and you get this beastly thing. It’s testosterone bisque and you’ll want seconds and thirds as the music activates the most unevolved, reptilian portions of your brain. I want a whole album of this shit to power me through this crazy year! From there however, the band demonstrates their evolving songwriting approach, mixing it up with softer and harder cuts that accent different aspects of the band’s identity. ā€œ(Not) Rocket Scienceā€ is a lighter but still plenty urgent rocker with nice use of simple piano lines to back the sludgy riffage. It’s fun and catchy but still sounds like the work of sketchy felons. A special nod must go to the very present bass rumble here by newcomer Harry Armstrong. ā€œAscend the Negativeā€ is an absolute riff monster, with chunky, abrasive leads running train on your ears as Ben narrates darkly. This one is made for mass replays and the lead riff will embed deep in your melon.

Other notable moments include the thrashy, borderline death metal attack of ā€œCemetary Ratsā€ which sounds far more like a Deceased song than an OG number as Ben transforms into King Fowley and spouts rage and fury over ripping guitar lines. It’s a rager and makes me wish OG pushed harder in this direction. ā€œThe Fury of a Patient Manā€ is a classic OG shit kicker, bold, loud, and belligerent and it sticks the landing with a memorable chorus and ace riffcraft. Closer ā€œEnd of Transmissionā€ also hits the sweet spot with a baseball bat, offering sticky sweet trilling alongside muscular riffs and hoarse bellows, all shaded with varying degrees of nuance and melodic noodling. There are some lesser contributions dotting the album too, reducing the overall experience. ā€œFalse Hope Dietā€ is interesting and revels in loose, jammy, Clutch-esque colors but it runs too long at 7 minutes. ā€œGemini (Twins of Evil)ā€ is just okay, and ā€œThe Justice Knifeā€ is better but also a bit middle of the road by OG standards. The lyrics are often witty, cutting, and occasionally edgy, and the sound is appropriately macho and imposing.

I’ve always loved Ben Ward’s baritone bellows and he’s in high feather here, sounding as forceful and vital as ever. He’s the rare frontman that can sing/shout/roar all at once and he’s always been the lynchpin to the OG sound. He can still make good songs better and always brings a pugnacious gravitas to the material. Joe Hoare has long been a top-rate riff meister and he once again brings all sorts of goodies to the freak festival. His brawny riff style compliments Ben’s rough delivery and drives the sound forward with headbangable lines that shake and bake the listener. His side quests into thrash (ā€œCemetary Ratsā€) and jammy space rock (ā€œEnd of Transmissionā€) are well executed, adding diversity and spice. New bassist Harry Armstrong does a great job, undergirding the riffs with an ever-present low-end rumble. The band is right as fook, it’s just the occasional writing hiccups that keep Science, Not Fiction from reaching the next level.

After so long a wait, I’d hoped to see Orange Goblin continue their long and successful run of killer releases, but despite some grand moments, Science, Not Fiction falls shy of past glories. Orange Goblin aren’t likely to ever drop a bad album, so there’s plenty of rough, ugly fun to be had, and fans will be mostly pleased. I just hoped for a touch more Goblin in the graveyard.
