OWC Launches New Line of SD and CFexpress Type B Memory Cards

Other World Computing (OWC) has announced a set of new SD and CFexpress Type B memory cards, which expands its support to photographers beyond just the computer accessories which it is most well known for.

OWC has historically produced memory, external drives, SSDs, docking accessories, network attached storage, and performance upgrade kits for computers, but today has expanded into SD and CFexpres memory cards under the new Atlas Pro brand.

OWC Atlas S Pro SD Memory Cards

Diverging from the norm, OWC lists what it calls "truthful" speed ratings for its SD cards and rates the new UHS-II V90 cards for 276 MB/s write and 290 MB/s read speeds. The company says this is enough speed for burst photo shooting as well as up to 8K video. OWC says it uses "advanced pseudo-Single-Level Cell (pSLC) flash memory to deliver ten times higher durability" than "ordinary" SD cards and offers fast speeds across the entire card capacity for even performance regardless of how much footage has been captured or photos taken.

The Atlas S Pro SD cards are impact, bend, shock, UV ray, and X-ray resistant and are covered by OWC's five-year limited warranty. The new cards are available in 32, 64, 128, and 256 GB capacities and start at $49 and tops out at $299.

OWC Atlas Pro and Atlas Pro Ultra CFexpress Type B Memory Cards

OWC is producing its own line of CFexpress Type B memory cards: the Atlas Pro and Pro Ultra CFexpress Type B memory cards. The company says that the Pro Ultra cards can deliver a sustained 1,400 MB/s transfer speed to support rapid-fire burst shooting and 8K video capture, but both the Pro and Pro Ultra cards support 1,500 MB/s write and 1,700 MB/s peak speeds. Basically, the Pro Ultra cards guarantee high sustained read and write speeds, while OWC doesn't promise any specific sustained speeds for the Pro cards.

The cards are impact, bend, shock, UV ray, and X-ray resistant, are fully compatible with Canon, Nikon, and Panasonic cameras, are backwards compatible with XQD devices, and fully meet CFexpress Type B 1.0 and 2.0 specifications. Just as was the case with the SD cards, the CFexpress cards are covered by OWC's five-year limited warranty.

OWC did not provide pricing for either the Pro or Pro Ultra CFexpress cards, but the Atlas Pro CFexpress cards will be available early Q2 2022 in 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB capacities while the Atlas Pro Ultra cards will be available early Q2 2022 in 320 GB and 640 GB capacities.

Thunderbolt CFexpress Type B Card Reader

To accompany the new CFexpress cards, OWC has also announced the Atlas FXR Thunderbolt CFexpress card reader. It allows any Thunderbolt or USB-C connected computer to access CFexpress memory cards at over 1,500 MB/s speeds. It is bus-powered and OWC says it is about the size of a standard debit card, which the company says makes it the smallest CFexpress Type B reader on the market. It ships with a Thunderbolt cable with a tethered USB-A adapter and is supported by OWC's two-year limited warranty.

Pricing was not disclosed, but it will be available in Q2 of 2022.

OWC Launches the Mercury Elite Pro Mini: A Portable 4TB Storage Drive

Other World Computing (OWC) has announced the Mercury Elite Pro mini, a new bus-powered compact and portable storage drive that emulates the design of its larger desktop storage solution.

OWC touts the Mercury Elite Pro mini as a tiny powerhouse that offers creative professionals, including photographers, the benefits of speed and universal USB-C connectivity in a compact interface that provides up to 4TB of storage capacity and 542 MB/s performance speeds. The design of the mini is meant to emulate OWC's desktop-sized Mercury Elite Pro, which it calls a “sibling” device.

The Mercury Elite Pro mini includes a USB-C cable with a tethered USB-A adapter that allows it to connect with basically any computing device: the company says it supports connections with past, present, and future Macs and PCs and iOS, Android, and Chrome OS devices.

In short, it can connect universally to any USB or Thunderbolt computer or device.

The Mercury Elite Pro mini is bus-powered, so like other popular travel drives, it doesn't require a separate power adapter. OWC indicates that it is fast enough to work as a streaming device as well, and can be used not just as a backup or work drive, but also can be used to watch videos, listen to music, and view pictures through a gaming console or directly attached to a smart TV. The OWC Mercury Elite Pro mini is compatible with Apple Time Machine and Windows File History as well as gaming consoles.

The compact storage device is fanless and therefore very quiet. It uses a heat-dissipating aircraft-grade aluminum housing and fanless venting to provide cool, nearly silent operation.

Like most OWC products, the Mercury Elite Pro mini comes in various configuration options. It is possible to buy just the housing itself with no storage drive, which allows users to input their own capacity at home. That option is of course the most affordable and is just $43. After that, it's a matter of deciding between a spinning disk or solid state. Spinning disk options are available in either 5400 RPM or 7200RPM, with the former in 1TB or 2TB options for $94 or $119, or 1TB in the latter for $129. These options are affordable, but won't provide the fast data transfer speeds OWC quotes above.

For that, the SSD options will be required and the company offers four configurations there: 480GB, 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB, which are available for $149, $229, $419, or $899 accordingly. All purchase options are available to peruse on OWC's website.

OWC’s Thunderbolt 4 Expansion Hub Fits Perfectly Under a Mac Mini

Other World Computing (OWC) has launched what it is calling the world's first Thunderbolt 4 certified storage and hub expansion solution, the miniStack STX. It fits perfectly under a Mac Mini and adds a ton of additional ports and storage capacity.

The miniStack STX is a storage and hub expansion device that adds three Thunderbolt 4 ports (which are USB-C compatible) as well as a universal HDD/SSD bay and an NVMe M.2 SSD slot which provides a large amount of expansion storage capacity that can be combined into a RAID 1 configuration if desired. The base OWC miniStack STX doesn't ship with internal storage, so the possible storage expansion options are up to the buyer.

The miniStack STX has a heat-dissipating aircraft-grade aluminum design with an internal heat sink and high-efficiency fan which OWC says provides cool, nearly silent operation. In addition to the three Thunderbolt 4 ports, it also has an additional display-focused port. The device can support a mix of up to five Thunderbolt devices, three USB devices, and two displays. This claim with Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 peripheral devices requires a certified Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 (mDP) adapter, and devices such as external drives will operate at Thunderbolt Thunderbolt 2 speeds in this use case.

Part of the selling point behind the OWC miniStack STX is that the 2018 Intel Mac Mini as well as the new M1 version don't allow the internal factory drive to be upgraded. With it, OWC says that the storage capacity of the Mac Mini can be expanded to 200x that which can be installed at the time of purchase. The company says this makes it a much more cost-effective solution than needing to buy a new computer down the line.

The miniStack STX supports up to 770 MB/s storage performance, which the company says is great for bandwidth-intensive video editing, photography, audio, virtual machines, and everyday data backup and access tasks.

The miniStack STX is only available in black, which doesn't quite look perfect with either of the finish options available for the Mac Mini, but it does still fit neatly under the computer.

The OWC miniStack STX is available for pre-order now and starts at $299, and can be outfitted with a combination of standalone hard drives, NVMe SSDs, or both for as little as $369 for as much as $1,249.

OWC Launches the World’s First Dual Bay Thunderbolt U.2 SSD Array

Other World Computing (OWC) has announced the Mercury Pro U.2 Dual SSD storage array and claims it is the first Thunderbolt Dual Bay U.2 desktop storage solution on the market and can take advantage of Thunderbolt's full 2,800 MB/s of data bandwidth.

The OWC Mercury Pro U.2 Dual offers up to 16TB of storage and is designed to support working professional creators and photographers who need fast access to files for both backup and direct access. The company says the array utilizes Thunderbolt’s full 2,800 MB/s of data bandwidth to function nearly six times faster than a typical SSD. The company says the dual drive bays house two NVMe U.2 SSDs for streamlined, easy-to-manage RAID storage.

The company says that the Mercury Pro will work well when tasked with backing up simple to complex video editing projects, as a Time Machine and File History backup of essential business data or personal photos, for consolidating files from multiple smaller drives to a single location for faster access, migrating data from an existing machine to a new computer, or just as a way to free up space on a computer's internal drive to improve performance.

OWC says the system is designed to be simple and straightforward. The Mercury Pro plugs into a compatible Thunderbolt machine via the included cable and is immediately ready to use. Additionally, OWC offers its MacDrive software for $50 that allows Windows PCs to use Apple formatted RAID drives, which makes it much easier to use this and other drives in cross-platform workflows.

Because it's a Thunderbolt device, OWC added a second port that allows the Mercury Pro to daisy chain devices together, including a single 5K or two 4K Thunderbolt displays.

OWC says that the Mercury Pro U.2 Dual is the only dual-bay solution on the market that holds two NVMe U.S SSDs. Additionally, it has the capability to be cross-platform compatible, can support up to five Thunderbolt devices, a display, or either a USB-C or DisplayPort device via the second Thunderbolt USB-C port, has a front-facing LED that shows the constant status of the drives, and is covered by a three-year warranty.

The OWC Mercury Pro U.2 Dual is available in capacities from 0TB (where users can add their own drives) starting at $300 and 2TB, 4TB, 8TB, and 16TB models starting at $549 at the low end and $3,300 at the high end.
