Parenting styles!
By now everyone's heard of parenting styles (or maybe that's just me and my obsession with understanding psychology as a struggling teen) but i'll explain anyway. there are four parenting styles: Authoritative, Authoritarian, Permissive, and Neglectful
The two measures that differentiate these are expectations and responsiveness. the ideal parenting style is authoritative: high expectations and high responsiveness. this isn't specifically about high grades or anything like that, but expectations of good manners, effort put into education and chores, etc. in return, there should be provision of unconditional love and a nurturing environment for the child. authoritarian parenting is high expectations and low responsiveness, where the expectations are also high or even higher but without the nurturing environment for the child to feel unconditionally loved and safe. neglectful parenting is low expectations and low responsiveness where the child is essentially left to fend for themself, as they aren't given any direction or nurturing. permissive parenting is interesting, as it's low expectations and high responsiveness, and is basically a parent attempting to be their child's friend rather than carer
I think in my case i had to deal with authoritarian parenting, which led to being hyper-critical towards myself and to others as that was what i normalised growing up. i still have some growing up to do to unlearn that. it's even worse because we start to parent ourselves as adults, so i've been authoritarian towards myself but also see-sawing between that and permissive where i just don't do anything and justify it as "well, i've been through enough that i GET to be lazy". i've been told not to call it laziness as it's the body wanting to heal. i understand that as it's clear that people generally gravitate towards activity and productivity, even if it's not in the socially demanded "work till you drop" way people still will create art and cook meals and make the world a better place in ways like that. when someone just doesn't want to do anything, it probably means there's something wrong but i can't let go of the guilt over doing nothing and feeling like i can't do "productive" things that i know i should want to do and i know that i used to enjoy
