One assumes that she means "with whom to..."

Linguistic battles I have lost (American English) because people can't figure this shit out so now wrong is right:

The subjunctive case is dead: "I would prefer you not do that" has become "I would prefer you don't do that," and "He suggested we go quickly" has become "He suggested we went quickly" (or something even sillier).

How much I care: 7/10 (tooth-grinding level)

The past perfect tense: "If I had done that..." is now "If I would have done that", etc.

How much I care: 6/10 (hard grimace level)

Step foot: "I have never set foot in that house" is now "I have never stepped foot in that house".

How much I care: 9/10 (choked-down swear words level)

Based off of: This is deeply stupid and should never be used, ever. The correct form is "based on."

How much I care: 113/10 (will correct the fucking president in the middle of his fucking State of the Union if I'm in the room)

Edit: Yes, I know I've lost these battles and more. That doesn't mean I'm happy about it.

@dbarros.
It's a bit disconcerting hearing, and seeing a caption about, the Motorola MC68000, while what is actually shown is a Thomson-CSF TS68000. I mean, sure, that was a licensed second-source, but would it have been that hard to use a photo of the actual Motorola part?
Sigh.

I've seen a few "rest in peace" posts regarding the recent death of the Pope but I can't but think that the people doing this are (given the long historical association of the Catholic Church with Latin) missing a rare opportunity to use the original Latin phrase that gave us R. I. P. - "requiescat in pace"

I really wish the person running this meeting would stop pronouncing the word "checkbox" as if it were "chexbox" (or checksbox?).

I'm not even going to speculate about how she pronounces "asterisk". (Actually, I'm pretty sure I know. Just like Goscinny and Uderzo's Gaul. 🙄)

Anyway, it's a small pet peeve, but it's still a peeve. So I'm peevish.

Photo: instructions on how to clean the coffee machine in the office, a picture means without words: rinse with hot water, approximately 60°C.
but instead of using ~ or ≈ they use ± ... what actually means rinsing it with water to +60°C ... or somehow rinsing it with water to -60°C

Editing a podcast interview I did with the amazing @triciakickssaas yesterday and I am super impressed!

Yes, I'm impressed with our conversation, and more about that when the episode comes out Monday.

But, the transcript correctly got "line to toe," where too many people would have tried to "tow" that line.

I now fully embrace our oncoming AI takeover!

TIL that ISO is not an initialism, and should be pronounced like the beginning of "isolation." But I couldn't find an ISO standard to that effect, which is disappointing.

@zeevy Given that slaves are generally tax-exempt & fed by their "owners", does the quality of the food & the seasonal nature of the work really mean the "poor farmers" weren't providing slave labour? #pedantic

People frequently call something a "science" when what I think they mean is "engineering". This seems to happen when folks refer to something complicated... but they aren't talking about rigorous testing of a hypothesis.
