Covering these very shapely antique pocket irons with leather was a challenging custom job for the #Bankshot team. The irons had a patent number, so I played billiard historian for the customer, whose table didn't have a nameplate. Now we know the maker was the Minn Billiard Co. of #Milwaukee and the table dated between 1914, the patent year, and 1918 (they weren't in the 1919 city directory).

Closeup of a rusty corner iron for an antique pool table, along with an old leather cover that was removed. The iron looks like a capital U, but the ends flare out like a fan, and these fans would cover the entire width of the table rails at the corner taper, for stability.Screen capture of an advertisement from the 1912 Milwaukee, Wisconsin Business Directory as follows:

Screen capture showing the header of a US Patent as follows:
AUGUST E. HAASE, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE WINN BILLARD C.O., OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN.
POCKET-IRON FOR POOL AND BILLIARD TABLES.
1,101,847. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 30, 1914.
Application filed February 14, 1913. Serial No. 748,322.

The team at Bankshot just completed restoration of this "St. Bernard Mission" pool table. Manufactured between 1906-1911, this was one of several Craftsman-style tables offered by the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co. According to Brunswick's PastPerfect web site, the largest billiard hall in the world (circa 1908, Pittsburgh, PA), had 54 of these. Can you imagine walking into that room?

A floor-level photo looking up at the corner of a massive, six-legged billiard table. Thick corbels and arches support the unseen slate top. The wood is dark golden quarter-sawn oak with lots of shiny flake in the figure. Black metal "cuffs" ornament the base of the square legs. The corner pocket has a chocolate brown leather basket, covered with a buffed leather shield.A view of the Bankshot Antiques workshop with a tall antique billiard chair in front of the newly restored "Saint B" pool table. The table is in "final fit-up" before getting packed for delivery. The slates are in place but without cloth, and the new cushions and green cloth are on the rails.

Boost Safety And Efficiency: Knowing When To Replace Rails
Hey pool sharks! 🎱 Been noticing those shots aren't bouncing quite right? Rails feeling a little...dead? It might be time to give your table some love with fresh rails.

Why fresh rails matter: Worn rails mess with your spin, speed, and all-around accuracy. It's like trying to play on a warped board.
Signs it's time: Balls rebounding unpredictably, that classic "thud" sound instead of a crisp bounce, maybe even visible wear on the rubber.
Don't DIY unless you're handy: This is a job for a pro. A good refelt and new rails keep your game tight. It's a worthwhile investment!
