#privacyWashing

Big Tech's love to preach "privacy this" & "privacy that" but in reality they track & collect your data.

Today we take a look at what privacy washing is, and why companies like & use it to gain your trust 👉 tuta.com/blog/big-tech-privacy

@bert_hubert

I received this 'safelink' share from outlook.com lately:

eur01.safelinks.protection.out

That must be very European, safe and privacyfriendly, isn't it?

(Or would Microsoft now know the contents and knowing who clicks on it 🤔 ?)

"Privacy washing" is when a company misleadingly, or fraudulently, presents a product or service as being responsible and trustworthy with data protection, when it isn't.

Keeping an eye out for this practice is critical when evaluating new tools to use: privacyguides.org/articles/202

New Privacy Guides article 🔒 🚩
by me:

They all claim:
"Your privacy is important to us."
But how can we know if that's true?

With all the privacy washing and disinformation around, it becomes increasingly difficult to evaluate who we can trust with our data.

There are red flags, and green(ish) flags, we can look for to help us assess who to trust, or not 🚩

New Privacy Guides article 🧼🔒
by me:

When corporations try to gain our trust with empty words and marketing lies,

When claims and policies aren't supported by facts,

When buzzwords like ""military-grade encryption", "privacy-enhancing", and "AI-powered" get thrown around like candies,

This is deceitful privacy washing,
and we must be vigilant to spot it.

Being able to distinguish between facts and marketing lies is increasingly becoming a survival skill online (yes, even more than before).

Remember: pretty website doesn't necessarily mean trustworthy website.

@iX_Magazin Wieviel bekommt ihr eigentlich von dafür bezahlt, dass ihr in regelmäßigen Abständen ein solches betreibt?

You’re literally the standards body of surveillance capitalism. Shut the fuck up about privacy. The corporate members that fund your existence violate privacy as the core driver of their business models.

Fucking hypocrites doing fucking PR.

👉 Hey, are you really OK with the sponsors of #cpdp ?

I didn't get into #privacy advocacy to put finances first, and to be insouciant about creeping corruption and #privacywashing .

👋 I think CPDP would be a good place to start a conversation about the standards we uphold as a community of advocates.

Computers, Privacy, and Data Protection (CPDP) is a conference funded and organised by Google, Microsoft, and TikTok (platinum sponsors get to help organise panels and participate on the main stage).

@CPDPconferences

Fellow #privacy advocates, it is time to shape our own institutions. To participate in a privacy conference with these sponsors is to be worse than a useless intellectual; it is to normalize privacy abusers (who don't spend money here for nothing, after all).

If you speak at this conference, speak out before your talk against these sponsors. And keep an eye out for organizing against this hypocritical bullshit, under the tag #privacywashing; it is coming.

Delighted with the #privacywashing through #PETs seminar at Schloss Dagstuhl – Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik (LZI) co-organised with Carmela Troncoso Emiliano De Cristofaro Thorsten Strufe.

We had some excellent senior researchers. We were also fortunate that young researchers who will shape the field joined us.

I wonder if the the recent decision from the Bavarian DPA (BayLDA) might be the first #privacywashing through #PETs that has been assessed by a data protection authority.

edpb.europa.eu/system/files/20

Secure Multiparty Computation (SMPC) is a privacy enhancing technology (PET). One of the approaches includes splitting the data into "shares" before processing them. In the computer science (PETs, cryptography) literature, many works assume that this will help "get around" the GDPR.

2025-02-26

I am excited to co-organise #Dagstuhl seminar next month on #privacywashing through #PETs and the need for a privacy evaluation framework to prevent #privacywashing.

The privacy guarantees of #PETs cannot be assessed at the protocol level (e.g., cryptographic protocol). The entire system and implementation needs to be assessed to make any privacy claims.

And here’s the thing: if/when there is another administration, you don’t let these fuckers weasel their way back in by waving their money. They should never have been let in to begin with. The number of fucking “human rights” and “ethical this or that” conferences I refused to speak at because they were sponsored by these assholes comes to mind. I guess being surveillance capitalists and farming people wasn’t bad enough for some folks.
