I love the slightly random nature of some of the architectural sculptures on Glasgow's older buildings. In this case, three putti operating a printing press with a lion's head above them. This is on a 1850s banking building on Gordon Street, so presumably they're printing bank notes.

Love these sculptures above an entrance to the former Glasgow Evening News building on Hope Street. Built in 1899, it was designed in a Free Classical style by Robert Thomson. I particularly like the Art Nouveau style owls at either end, which presumably represent the wisdom of the printed word.

If you want to know the actual difference between the three when it comes to art and architecture, it's quite simple. A putto is a male winged baby figure which is usually up to mischief of some kind. In contrast, a cupid is a putto armed with arrows (of love), while a cherub is a putto used in a religious context.

As it's St Valentine's Day, I thought I'd share this cheeky little cupid climbing a keystone above the entrance to 215 High Street in Glasgow to take potshots at the people passing below. I know he's really a putto, but putti, cupids, and indeed cherubs, are used pretty much interchangeably in popular culture.

I love this decoration above the entrance to the former British Linen Bank building at 215 High Street in Glasgow, especially the stained glass boat in the central oeil-de-bouef window and the cheeky little putto clinging to the keystone!

I love how skillfully this putti has been carved, and how crisp it still looks, even after being exposed to the Glasgow weather for more than a century! The hair is especially well done. It's above a side door to the old Glasgow Savings Bank building on New City Road, which was designed by Niel C. Duff and was built in 1910.

I love these industrious little putti, printing banknotes and minting coins, on the former Commercial Bank of Scotland building on Gordon Street in Glasgow. Designed by David Rhind and constructed in 1854, it's now occupied by a branch of the Royal Bank.
